Having Your Resume Professionally Written is it Worth it?

I'm looking into having my resume written professionally.

I have about 14 years experience but unfortunately I dont have a degree so my feeling is that I need a standout resume to help me get my foot in the door.

I've worked my entire career on the island and I'm looking to get in the city now. I think in order for me to be competitive I need something that's going to really highlight my acheviements and set me apart from others who have equal amounts of experience but also have the degree.

I've searched around and the going price on the island seems to be around $500.

Yes, I think that's pricy but on the otherhand if it will get me a job I think it's worth it.

Am I kidding myself?

What do you think?

I would canvas your friends and other sources before spending $500.

The library has tons of books on doing different types of resumes.

Department of Labor might even be able to help you find help for under $500.

I think it's worth it. I had mine done back in May and have been in my new position since the end of August. I used RPW

Edited to add...I think I paid around $200.

I would draft a resume on your own (and checking out some resume books) and start asking friends for opinions first. Especially if you have friends in the field in which you are seeking a job. If you still think it needs more polish, then maybe start looking for a service.

I agree. I would assume you have to put together the info for the person anyway.

I have tons of resumes that are sent to me all of the time. I think having a 2nd, 3rd, 4th set of eyes is extremely helpful. I've seen very strong resumes & a few very weak ones. I do have to say, I look at experience & then if I'm blown away I look for where they went to school. We have a lot of people without degrees working for us - it's really about their work experience. The only time a degree comes into play is when I'm trying to get someone in from Canada on a TN Visa (Bachelors is required).

We did start a post about having a resume review on this board. If you want me to take a look at it, FM me. I also have a lot of resume formats that are available to me.
