So everyone knows there's budget cuts, so now admin is asking senior staff to 'come to the benefit gala ($200 a head!Chat Icon ) or just donate something.

dh says they cannot do this.

we were also told that the higher ups will be 'watching out who gives'.

That's BS that they say the "higher ups wil be watching". I used to work at a non-profit and we would always be asked to give. We would donate as a TEAM so it would not come out to as much (I think it ended up being like $10.00 a person).

I remember our program would just purchase an ad in the program. We would NEVER go to the gala, because for most of us, on our salary we couldn't afford it, period.

I always remember this one lady who worked at my agency coming around every year for the United Way.

Re: your non-profit job asking you for a donation wwyd

Last year, the school in SC I worked at was raising money for the United Way and made it known that they expect 100% donation.

I was out for a few days and when I came back I had a note in my mailbox saying that the admins donated in my name and to bring in my donation as soon as possible.

Some nerve!

I used to work for a small not for profit, and rather than outright ask for donations, they would host events and basically make it known that we HAD to go and pay for our tickets. Granted our tickets were half price, but it was still $30-50 bucks out of our very small pay checks. Sometimes they'd give us a day off for attending, but I never really thought it was fair that they made us give up our time, pay for ourselves, and make it mandatory that we do so.

Last year it was requested that all of the staff at my non-profit attend our gala and pay the $50 or so that it cost to go. NONE of us went. Sorry, but we make close to nothing as it is already - I'm not spending my money on something I don't even want to go to.
