Re: there is always something....

I had a boyfriend before I got married who was allergic to my cat. He dealt with the sneezing, itching for awhile. We went on vacation and I asked my sister to watch my cat while we were away. I never picked up my cat. Needless to say, the boyfriend is long gone but my sister still has the cat! Tell him to take zyrtec and deal with it...LOL

Depends on how much you love your cats. IMO dealing with it later is a recipe for disaster as well. For me it would be a deal breaker unless he is willing to live with allergy pills. Falls in the same category as my friend who dated someone out of her religion. It was always "I'll worry about it when I have to." Three years later she broke up with him with lots of "If you loved me enough you would. . ." thrown in for good measure from both sides. Men come and go (and at 3 weeks they ALL look good)Chat Icon but a kitty's love lasts foreverChat Icon

i dated a guy that was allergic to my cat. i always made sure to vacuum the rugs, furniture, etc. right before he came over. my boy is a scaredy cat & always hides when people come over so him being out in the room was never an issue. i was about to invest in air purifiers for the rooms too but we stopped dating so i didn't have to.

Re: there is always something....

At 3 weeks, I would try not to worry too much about it (but let's face it, I'd actually be worrying about it, too). If it gets serious, I would suggest allergy shots. They can work wonders, if it's something he is willing to do.

As you know, for ME (and I can't speak for anyone else), animals are an extremely important part of my life. Essential, really. I could not live the rest of my life happily without my horses, my cats, and (soon enough) dogs. My match was someone who shares my love for animals and would be able to live and be around them. Then again, when I met my DH, I only had horses and they didn't live in my house. Chat Icon So I guess that's easier for me to say in hindsight...

It's tough, though... and I wouldn't want to write off a new relationship because of allergies. With time, he may realize he wants to be around you AND your cats -- so he will hopefully start considering allergy meds / shots.

Re: there is always something....

I've been the guy in your situation Chat Icon . I'm highly allergic to cats.

It may come down to how bad the allergy is. I cannot go into a home that has a cat. Benadryl is the only allergy drug that does even a little something to help with my cat allergy. Even then, my eyes have swollen shut and I have been itchy and had trouble breathing. What people do not understand is that the reaction does not stop when I leave a house where there is a cat. I will be in a heightened state of allergic reaction for about 3 days and I get the worse Benadryl hangovers. Sorry but I feel like I need to educate people who think that I'm supposed to shut up and deal. I would not have been able to have much of a relationship with someone who had a cat. I ask about cats before I go anywhere. There's no simple answer here. Sorry.

When I was dating this was a deal breaker. I think I dated one guy that was allergic to Chloe and he said he would deal with it. I made it clear that Chloe and I were a packaged deal and he agreed to shots or pills if the time came.

I will add that I did get an air purifier and kept the house as clean as I possibly could just so he knew I was doing my part in trying to keep him comfortable.

Good Luck! Chat Icon

Uhh...I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

When I met my BF, I didn't know he had two cats. I'm allergic to cats (and dogs). I went to his apartment MAYBE a total of three times in a year because I would get so sick to a point where I would miss work.
The only way around it was for him to always come by me. When we talked about living together, he knew the cats couldn't come. Luckily, his brother was able to take them in! Chat Icon
I still feel REALLY bad about it but what can I do? It's out of my control. Chat Icon

I totally know where you are coming from. I've gone two weeks with symptoms after being around a cat. It's miserable. I had to let my BF know early on that if it got serious, we would never have any pets.
