Question about the track?

Okay, 4 times around the track = 1 mile.

My question is, I always run on the 8th lane which is the outer most lane. I start and stop at the same place. Am I going a further distance than when I ran on the 8 lane?

Re: Question about the track?

I thought tracks were set up so that if you start and finish on the marked part of the lane, it will equal 1 mile no matter which lane you use.

It sounds to me like you are still running 1 mile.

Re: Question about the track?

if you are starting and stopping at the same place, then its a mile. they are designed to be the same length all the way around

Re: Question about the track?

Does anyone know if every track is the same? is 4 times around ALWAYS 1 mile?

I think the track by my house is smaller. I have to check the meter marks I guess.

no not all tracks are the same. I know the HS track near my parents house, 4 laps = 1 mile
but the Middle School track, 8 laps = 1 mile.

Usually you can figure it out by looking at it or it's marked.

Re: Question about the track?

If you are on the outer most lane, you are going slightly further than if you are on the inner most lane. I don't know what the difference is, but it would be slightly longer, since the outer perimeter of the track is longer than the inner perimeter of the track. If you are running a whole lap or more, there will be a slight difference in the distance.

I also tested this when I used to walk on a track with my pedometer Chat Icon
