Do you think you have a right to
receive a raise every year?
Consider it's a good employee who does what they're supposed to do. If your company had the resources, should they feel obligated to give raises?
I ask because I was discussing raises with my boss and she said that we were lucky to get one raise in the past 3 years. I always took for granted that people just get raises every year. Due to our agency's difficulties this has not been possible, but my boss is acting like people shouldn't get raises unless they do something beyond spectacular. (btw, I will NOT be getting a raise )

yes.
doesn't the cost of living go up each year? it only makes sense.
if i didn't have a job with a raise each year, I'd quit
where is the incentive then?
I don't know if doctors, etc get raises each year though...

Yes, I do. One year it was so bad at work none of us got raises but it was just that one year.

I agree with the above. In my last job, everyone got raises once a year. The amount varied based on individual performance.
ETA: Last year, we didn't get raises because the company wasn't doing well due to the economy but that was not the norm and even though we were not happy about it, we understood.

Re: Do you think you have a right to
We haven't gotten raises for the past two years. But I think it's better than laying off more people. Do I think it stinks? Yes! Am I happy I have a job? Yes!
But it is nice that they haven't raised the rates for our health insurance, so I won't complain.

Actually, the cost of living has not gone up lately. The Social Security Administration for the second year in a row (2011) will not be giving cost of living increases due to the recession and the devaluation of the US dollar and the CPI.

Re: Do you think you have a right to
Do i have a right to a raise? No.. the company can do whatever they want. If i don't like it, then i can go find another job.
Do I think it's nice to have a raise every year? Yes, of course.
As for incentives.. well, in this economy i think i'm pretty lucky to have a job that i enjoy and that i am happy with my salary. That's my incentive.. to keep my job..
But i think the days of getting automatic raises every year have passed (at least in my field). I went about 4 years without getting a raise and only increased my salary after i switched jobs. Last year we took a pay cut due to the economy (they gave us an extra paid vacation day a month to make up for it, and we got our regular salary back in 2010)

Re: Do you think you have a right to
I don't think it should be automatic in bad times. We are still in bad times.
I didn't get an increase in 2008. I did in 2009.
Some got a decrease..so if I had my wish I would have a job that paid me well that I enjoyed.
Now if it went on for years and years then I would not continue there.
Sometimes you have to leave to get more money.

Re: Do you think you have a right to
In my mind, I believe I have the ability to earn the right to a raise each year.
However, raises are not guaranteed. I don't think they are 100% guaranteed in any job. We receive company-wide raises in March. I believe each department is allocated a specific amount or percentage. I happened to receive a significant pay increase, but I do know that I busted my butt, and have the cases/logs to support it. I also realize that if I didn't perform as well, I wouldn't have gotten what I got.

Mine either. It's so frustrating. The last job I had only had COL raises yearly and did not do raises based on performance.
I believe you have a right to a yearly raise.
