We adopted our cats at North Shore Animal League in Port Washington and had a GREAT experience!! 
p.s.- I think adopting a puppy is a wonderful idea!

I would check any of the shelters and North Shore Animal League.
Also, somtimes Petsmart and Petco do adoption drives. I would check their websites too.

We got our first puppy (ln march 2010) from North Shore, and we ended up having to put her down a month later because she had canine distemper. They treated us absolutely horribly. I would stay far far away from that place.
We finally adopted another dog from a rescue organization in the South. Our dog is a complete sweetheart and they actually drive the dogs to whereever you are for a simply donation of dog food. The name of the place is golden S rescue (goldensrescue.org)

Def go to brooklyn care and control, they constantly are putting dogs down b/c they are over crowded. If I didn't live in an apartment I would take another dog or 2

Totally agree! My mother adopted her collie from them and the best part is you are saving an animal's life since BCC is unfortunately a kill shelter. We adopted our dog from North Shore Animal League in port Washington.
Just be careful with both places- do your research before going in there. North Shore adopted my parents a chow mix puppy claiming she'd be a great family dog.  Chow's are notoriously bad with kids and wound up nearly taking out my sister's eye!
