ESL Books

ESL is a new area for me. The teacher has been using the whole language approach with them and that is fine, but I still think they need a text (I keep thinking that learning English is just like when I learned Spanish, and I had a text book for that)

Any ideas?

I am not an ESL teacher, but I love everything about Stephen Krashen.

Here is a video of him explaining comprehensible input. I bet it will change your idea about a textbook.

Are you English? What about graphic novels?

Re: ESL Books

I have heard him speak before and I agree with a lot that he has to say. However, I think there are rules in a language that need to be learned and a reference book is always a good thing.

We have a robust library and lots of opportunities for kids to experience language in many different medias.

Re: ESL Books

I teach ESL, but I'm confused by your question. Are you looking to just keep an ESL textbook in your classroom as independent work? Or do you mean adapted books that an ESL student can read? What grade do you teach?

Re: ESL Books

I teach ESL as well, but to adults. I really like Cutting Edge, English File and Face to Face. However all of these are British English and are for adults.

I am supervising ESL this year. I think they need an English textbook similar to what our Spanish/French/Italian students have, but in English. A book with units of study. Does that make any sense?

Re: ESL Books

One textbook series we have is Visions. I'm not sure of the publisher but could investigate for you if you'd like. There are two others we are previewing but I'm not crazy about any of them. I teach HS ESL and need to prepare my students for the English Regents, therefore I prefer to focus my content work on literature (novels, short stories, poetry). I find the textbook series to be juvenile/disconnected to the needs of the ESL students. Feel free to FM me with any questions.

I totally agree with this...I teach HS and MS ESL, and NEVER use a textbook, unless absolutely necessary. The main focus on the secondary level is content area, and most textbooks aren't that suited to it. They tend to focus on the grammar and while grammar is important, I don't have time to focus whole lessons solely on contractions. I've got regents to prepare for and US History to get them through.

That being said, in the past I've used, High Point, North Star, and Voices in Literature.
