Re: Not welcome on other boards...

Didn't see your post on parenting (and I lurk here sometimes) but my answer to your question would be something smaller in size.

Big presents are hard to store even when you have a lot of space. I like when my kids get something compact that can easily be put away.

I didn't see your post on Parenting, but I wouldn't be much help, anyways. Don't feel too offended because I get ignored most of the time, too!Chat Icon

Wow, I never get ignored when I post over there. It was probably just an off 'hour' and your post got shuffled off the first page.

Re: Not welcome on other boards...

Sometimes I like to give my niece and nephews "time" with DH and I, without their siblings or their parents, honestly they like it more than toys. We get "Spend The Day/Overnight with Aunt and Uncle" - we pick them up on Saturday morning, come back to our house, or take them to the movies, lunch, sometimes an overnight, my DH took one of my nephews to the movies, arcade, or to the go-karts. I had my niece for an overnight, we baked cookies and did arts & crafts, watched movies and made popcorn.

Honestly, they get more excited about getting my DH all to themselves than anything we could possibly buy them (there are 3 of them).

As a parent, I would prefer smaller items if space were limited. I also like having more smaller things that can be put away because I can rotate the toys around. Sometimes I feel like DS has so much stuff out at once that it's overwhelming, so I will pack away a couple of things and then after a few weeks switch things out for variety - you can't really do that for the big stuff.

And, at the risk of sounding high maintenance, unless it is an outside toy, I prefer to buy the big stuff myself. I sort of feel like if something is going to take up that much room in my house, I want to be the one to decide what it is. Gift cards are nice, but I love seeing him open things and telling him later "Aunt XX got this for you, isn't it fun?" Another idea is getting them clothes with their favorite characters on them. I don't normally buy that stuff for him, I am more practical, but he likes opening it and wearing it.

I don't get many responses on there either- and I HAVE a kid Chat Icon

I think the gift card is a great idea!! If you want him to open something- maybe get something small and then a gift card they can use for something big once they have a bigger place?

If they live local to you- maybe you can take them out for the day- to the movies or chuck e. cheese or something instead of a gift.

Re: Not welcome on other boards...

I've noticed a lot of posts recently on Parenting without ANY replies or with only one or two (including my own). It's not just you. I didn't see your post, but honestly if I had, I would never have known that you don't have kids. Not sure how I would have known that by seeing your post, I'm not too observant of those things.

But regardless, I think it's very thoughtful of you to take into consideration the size of the gift if someone has already mentioned that space is an issue. I live in an apartment and I've already mentioned to those who have asked, that we would really have trouble storing any large size items because we just don't have the space. If someone went ahead and gave us a big ride on truck, I'd say thank you and then Chat Icon , lol.

You can get a great gift that isn't big in size. I don't look at the physical size of gifts - a $500 item can be 1/10th the size of a $30 toy, KWIM? How about you get them games for whatever video system they have? Or tickets to a show they might like? Or to a game?

Eh.

I needed some opinions from parents, and have posted questions, only to get no replies.

Very annoying. Definitely makes me feel very unwelcome.

aww, I don't think anyone was ignoring you (I didn't even see the post) , don't take it so personally, I have a kid and sometimes I'm "ignored" too ....

We live in an apt, it's not small, but I still don't like it when DD gets big gifts, I'd rather DD got something small in size, I don't care about a monetary value, as long as DD likes it (she likes everythingChat Icon ) GC is a good gift too, so they can buy whatever they want. OR maybe you can ask your sister what they would like ...

what about GC and write in card something about new place new things...
This way she can get big when they have more space.

I agree with this... and maybe get something small to go along with it so have something to open/play with.

I was going to suggest this too-my niece recently told me the best present she ever received was when me and my husband took all of our nieces and nephews to see the Harlem Globetrotters and out to lunch. Maybe you can do a special day with them, those are lasting memories!
