Sick day?

So on Monday morning; DS woke up with a little cough...no fever; said he felt well- so I sent him to school...

I had volunteered to help out with a class activity in the afternoon; and when it was time to go he clung to me saying he didnt feel well and wanted to go home... The teacher had mentioned he'd been coughing, but had been fine otherwise... (side note- I have volunteered before and he never gave me a problem when I left)

So, I took him home... He ate lunch, went to the Dr and then I made him do homework, and writing assignments until 3pm. It was very low key; but I didnt want him to think it was ok to come home and play and/or watch TV.

He was absolutely fine last night, running around, playing etc...

Well sure enough, last night he wakes up crouping... His breathing was terrible, we were in and out of steamy bathrooms, doing nebulizer treatments and "sleeping" sitting up...

He(we) have been up since 4am...
He still has no fever; and hasnt coughed since 6am...he says he feels good...
But; Im concerned about him running around the gym and the playground and putting him into a croup/cough attack ...???

Dr. gave us the OK for school; said he isnt contagious and is fine as long as the "no fever" thing remains...

I was torn this morning on what to do...
I can't imagine him having another day home; when he is acting fine... but am concerned about his breathing and crouping....???

I decided to keep him home (he is with my mom) but typically when this kinda stuff happens, what do you do?

He is prone to the croup... but sometimes gets the "croupy cough" without actually being sick...???

Re: Sick day?

You will get as many answers to this as there are moms, but for me, a working mom, if my kid doesn't have a fever he goes to school.

My youngest has asthma. If he has symptoms I give him his meds and alert the nurse to the situation. If he goes into distress she gives him more meds and lets me know if he has responded or not. So far I've never had a situation where I had to pick him up because he didn't respond (knock wood), but of course I would!

Re: Sick day?

I agree with the PP...if SD doesn't have a fever then off to school she goes so I can go to work.

Keep them home. I don't play around with anything breathing related.

Re: Sick day?

We just dealt with this last week. I swear I've read they were supposed to be over croup after 2 yo, but we're still dealing with it at 9yo.

He was off one day of school, just like you rested, did homework, no TV. A quiet day.

I put the cold mist humidifier on in his room, door shut for a few hours before he goes to sleep. Ran it all night. By the 3rd-4th day, he was almost 100% better. By the weekend, he was perfect. This week has been fine.

If he's home with your mom, I'd run the cool mist all day.

My thinking is - this is a very easy week for school. Anything he misses, he can make up.

I hope he's better soon!Chat Icon

I totally trust what he says so I would def. send him to school if he said so. With all the activities going on this week, he will miss out on alot. if hes feeling ok, I dont see why he should stay home. Can you call during the day and check up? its not like he cant be picked up as a last resort.
