Doctrate

I am considering a doctrate in educ. admin.

Do you think schools will shy away from hiring me because I am "expensive" when it is earned or do you think it would be looked up on as beneficial?

I don't know if things have changed, but back in 2004-2005 Dowling recommending me not putting my MBA on my resume because many districts would be turned off by a new hire with 2 masters. I do remember one woman in my student teaching class had her JD and no district would even look at her, just too expensive. I think a doctorate and JD are the same on the pay scale, but I'm not 100% sure.

I would think if you're going for a traditional classroom position you might be too expensive, but if you are going for more of a district admin position, you might be okay.

I wouldn't do it now. There has been a lot of backlash against education schools (it was inevitable- first blame the teachers, then blame the places where they were trained.)

I am also wondering, based on what's going on in NYC with the new Chancellor, if we are going to see a trend away from supts. with ed backgrounds to supts. with business degrees and no ed experience. Sadly, it seems that leaders with ed backgrounds aren't needed or wanted in many places. So I'd wait and see how things go with Cathie Black, to see if it becomes a larger trend. It would be a shame to put in that kind of work and find that no one wants your background.
