How is this possible?

My co-worker's husband bought her a puppy for Christmas. He's 2.5 months old and she said he's already neutered. I just assumed she was confused but she took him to the vet this morning who confirmed that he is indeed neutered. I always thought you have to wait until they're 6 months?

nope my sister waited until her dog was 4 months old to get the dog neutered.

my other sister got her dog at north shore and her dog was about 2 and a half months when it was neutered.

Buddy was neutered at 2 months and I got him at North Shore

that is weird. i always thought they had to be mature enough to do it.

I've heard of it--a lot of puppies at shelters are neutered very early--but I think most vets would like them to be older.
Our dog's breeder made us sign a contract that we wouldn't neuter until 12 months!

Not to get graphic but as long as the testicles have dropped they can neuter the dog earlier. If the testicles haven't dropped (for some males they unfortunately never do) the procedure is much more involved so they will wait.

its definitely more common now to neuter at a young age... it helps with the unnecessary breeding... people put it off, etc and dogs get pregnant

I got Jessie neutered at 6.5 months... i got her from a byb... i didnt know anything about bybs before i got her...

i think its a great idea that shelters neuter...

Darwin was at 6 months. Our breeder said it stunts their growth (a little) if you do it younger, something to do with the hormones and our vet said not all dogs are fully developed so 6 months is usually a safe bet. But I have definitely heard of people doing it sooner.

same thing with our cat. we had to wait until she was 4 months old to get her spayed (she was six weeks old when we adopted her) and typically many places do it a hell of a lot younger which some think is not healthy.

I just spoke to someone at a shelter about this the other day. In the past, they waited until a dog was 5-6 months to spay/neuter. The reason they are doing it as young as 2 months now is so they can be sure the dog will be fixed. It is to try to stop back yard breeders or accidental breeding, and is not harmful to the dog, but it is still not ideal.

it is also common to spay/neuter the mixed bred puppies at 10 weeks before they go to their home

they want to make sure that the new lines are protected - they don't wan to meerely have a contract to force them to get them fixed - many people i know who have one - especially the labordoodles and golden doodles were fixed before coming home

each there own - especially males it can keep them smaller - my breeder wanted us to wait till 18 months to fix him so he got his full size

You can't neuter a female dog

Neutering and spaying are two very, very different things. Neutering is outpatient and has a shorter recovery time. Spaying (for female dogs) is a more invasive surgery. No idea when either can be done, but all animals we've gotten from North Shore have been neutered at a young age (8-12 weeks or so, both dogs and cats). We only had one female dog, and I don't remember when she was spayed.

Wow! I've always heard 4 months and older. We adopted Irwin from North Shore at 10 weeks and he wasn't neutered. We brought him back months later to be neutered. Maybe because he was sick when we adopted him? He was on meds.

My parents got a dog at north shore and she was spayed at 3 months. I got my male dog neutered at 7 months.

They dont usually neuter/spay that young because its dangerous to put them under but a lot of shelters do it as soon as they can ..

Noth Shore Animal league does it at 8 weeks......it also depends on the weight of the dog....i had to wait a little longer for my little guy

I think most vets wait until at least 4-6 months. My friend and I had the same vet, and he suggested 4 for my dog and 6 months for my friend's dog. He said he wanted to wait a little longer for her dog because the breed she has (bichon frise) often tend to need surgery to remove some teeth, so he wanted those teeth to grow in first to kill two birds with one stone (if necessary). I never heard of doing it at 2.5 months!

We got Bailey at 4.5 months and we neutered her within the month. When we adopted her were had to agree to have her spayed no later than 6 months.

Our other pup was spayed before my bf got her and she was very young. She was a rescue and I think their line of thinking was that they neuter/spay before adopting out the dogs then they are preventing additional strays/unwanted pups
