Re: Today is my 8th Wedding Anniversary and DD received the diagnosis of

Sometimes just a diagnostic is a relief. But it's also a grieving phase.

Is she in a special needs school or mainstream school?

A lot of special needs schools have parent support groups.

I would ask for CPSE for information on local support groups.

What are you looking for?

Work with a Social worker?
Meet other parents with a child with same diagnostic?
Do GTG/activities with children with similar special needs?

The JCC in Plainview probably has programs too. The KISS program.

Re: Today is my 8th Wedding Anniversary and DD received the diagnosis of

The best advice I could give is to educate, educate, educate yourself...Take into consideration what all professionals have to say but do the research yourself. Find the approach that works best for you and your family by reading, internet research, looking at studies and talking to a variety of different professionals. The one thing that is a certainty when working with special needs kids is that there is no one right way to treat...and as you already know you are going to be her best advocate so be sure and find a treatment approach the jives with you and your daughter and believe me there are alot of choices out there.... You can FM me if you want resources on DIR/floortime and speech and language those are my areas of expertise so to speakChat Icon HTH

I completely agree !!! I just wanted to send a ton of Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon because just like SMDL stated it's definitely a grieving process. However, the labels are just that, labels. Use what your daughter loves, and motivate and reinforce through that medium. I absolutely wish there were more DIR/Floortime therapists available because the whole premise of that therapy is connecting with the child emotionally.

I also believe so many of the disorders fall under sensory issues. I would recommend a strong sensory diet to ground your dd. I have yet to attend a meeting but I do know a support group in Nassau for SPD. Feel free to FM me if you are interested.

I would highly recommend reading any of Stanley Greenspan's books, as well as all the sensory processing disorder books. (out of sync child, raising a sensory smart child, etc). Robert Schramm's book on Verbal Behavior is also excellent.

ETA Your children are adorable. Just going by your photos, Ava looks like she enjoys posing :) Perhaps some sort of drama class may be something she would like ?
