Another (new) Question about HIIT

Silly question but - during the warm-up do you walk or jog? I always have a problem with knowing what is enough of a warm-up. im used to my younger days when i just put on my sneakers and run. i still do this when i run on the street.

when i run on the treadmill i start out at 3.8 for like 30 seconds and then do 5.0 and 5.5 for a minute and then go to 6.0 usually by the 2nd min. and gradually increase up to 7.0 from there over the course of the first mile. Is this the type of warm - up you do for HIIT? Also for the experts, is this enough of a warm-up for regular exercising?

I don't do HIIT so I'll let someone else answer that, but as far as the backs of your arms, once you lose some of the fat, you'll see muscle definition. Some exercises you can do are skull crushers, french press, and triceps pressdowns. If you google these, you'll see pictures of how to do them (I'd describe them but it's just easier for you to do a search).

P.S. don't bother with the machines at the gym. Most of them aren't nearly as good as just using free weights.
And also, small girly weights will get you nowhere! Heavier weights will get you results much much faster.

THANKS SO MUCH ANNIE GIRL! I am going to google the exercises. I think I am pretty much at the toning point now - I do have some flab on my arms but, it is the last place to leave my body so short of starvation - I think I need to get moving on the exercises to help!

As far as HIIT, it does take a lot out of you. And if you can, Id start out slow. Push yourself and see how much your body can take.

You wont have a heart attack if you know your body is telling you that you need to slow down and breathe. I know exactly what you mean.........but the 3 miles that you are running during the week, what is your speed?

You can always increase your intensity.

I dont think you have to be at a certain level to do HIIT. Try and run as fast as you can during the fast interval..whatever that may be..even if its 6.0. When I started doing HIIT I was running at 7.0 (which was very fast for me at the time) now I worked my way up to 9.0 and my goal is 10-10.5.

I do HIIT 2-3 times per week.

I am not sure if this is correct, but I am exhausted by the time I finish. This is what I do for HIIT.

all at a 2.5% incline
5 minute warm-up, start at 3.0 and by the end of 5 minutes I am at 5.5

then 10 times I do 9.0 (sometimes I try for 10.0) for 30 seconds and then 3.8 for 60 seconds

then a 5 minute cool down, I usually jog at 6.0 and work my way down to 3.0

I am not sure if this is exactly correct, but all i know is I am tired by the end.

Thanks peabody! I did it yesterday and did something very similar - only I warmed up starting at 3.0 to about 6.0. Same with the cool down - I jogged for most of it. I did the fast intervals at 9 but the slow ones at 6 - i feel like much more of a difference would be such a shock to my system? or am i missing the point of the exercise?

you should be running so fast that there is absolutely no way that you can run durring the slow intervals. if you are running durring the slow intervals, then you are not running fast enough during the fast intervals.

you should walk or slow jog, or just jump off to catch your breath durring the slow intervals.

thanks so much snowboardgirl. im going to try that tomorrow. i was nervous to run any faster because i felt like i was going to fall off! are all treadmills the same - like is a 9 setting on every treadmill the same? what number do they go up to?

My treadmill at our gym has the button where you set the two speeds, it takes about 5 seconds to get the full switch.

So what I do is I start five seconds before, so example:

Minute 5 (after my 5 minute warm up): Instead of starting my interval at minute 5:00, I start at minute 4:55 so by the time it gets to 5:00 its at the speed I want.....and I stop at 5:25 so by the time 5:30 comes around, it will be at the lower speed that I want.

START SPEEDING UP 10-15 SECONDS BEFORE, DEPENDING ON HOW FAST YOU WILL BE GOING. TAKE ALL TAHT TIMEOUT OF YOUR REST.
