Question?

Hey I am a city teacher and have been for several years. I just got my sp ed certification Birth-6 ( 2 different certfications) and added the 5-9 extension. Does anyone know if a high school in the city would consider me for a job eventhough technically I am only sp ed cerrtified through 9th grade?

Thougts? Suggestions?

BTW I have been teaching 5th grade in a middle school.

Re: Question?

We had a teacher who had that. She taught 2 double-period English classes (9th grade) and then another elective (mixed grades) I want to say that since more than 3/5 of her day she was in-license it was okay.

She quit so I can't ask her. Not for the licensing thing, though. Something else.

Re: Question?

Interesting that you brought this up because we have a situation like this at my school. Several teachers who came from The Fellows program have SPED certification 5-9. They have been teaching out of license. However if we hire a TFA teacher, we have to sign an agreement that they will NOT teach anything above grade 9.

I don't know how this was not realized when the Beds survey was conducted!

Re: Question?

I believe you are allowed to go up a level or down a level. In my school we have common branch people teaching grade 7 (I believe there is/was something called a Rule 3 license which you would be granted if you did 3 years in another area- but that was pre-NCLB so I don't know if that's still the case. My 7th grade students' math teacher is a licensed common branch. I am English 7-12 certified but I have taught 6th grade ELA several times.

Re: Question?

my husband got the 5-9 cert. in common branch and special ed. through NYC teaching fellows. he taught 9th grade global for three years and is teaching 10th grade global this year. i think you can go up or down a grade level or two in NYC.
