Re: 4 year olds and school
We did 5 days for pre-k so that they were in the routine of going to school every day. I knew that changing schools and increasing the number of days at the same time would have been too much for DD to handle when she started K, and we figured we'd do the same for DS.
Good luck! I can't believe he's almost in pre-k!

What did you do when she was 3 Cathy? We also did seperation class when he was 2, so I guess he is used to different schools and more times a week if we compare the seperation class. I started off one season 1/week, then the next season I did 2/week for seperation. Then he had the summer off and we started 3 year pre-school 3/week.

Re: 4 year olds and school
I think it depends on the child. Ava goes 5 full days because she definitely needs the activity and she really, really loves school. If she didn't love it as much or she couldn't handle the full day, I would only send her half day. I will say this, ever child in her school goes at least 5 half days, though.

Re: 4 year olds and school
My DS did 2 days a week for the 3yo program and then I went to 3 days a week for the 4yo program....I too am a SAHM
He transitioned very well to FT 5 day kindergarten this fall ....
I just felt like he was going to be in school for the next 12 years and I had very little time with him left at home to do any "us" stuff...
Granted he drives me crazy most days , but now that he goes to school 5 days a week all day, I do miss having him around so I'm glad we did it the way we did

Re: 4 year olds and school
I started my son out this year at three mornings per week. Then we added a fourth morning at the school he will be going to next year (the PTA runs a program there for kids entering kindergarten the following year.) I also would up making two days extended days so he goes to school until 2:00. He's an only child so he really likes being at school and playing with his friends. So basically, we have Thursdays off and I like having a free day to do other things with him. He'll be going to school for five days soon enough.

This is me too. I sent DD 2 days a week when she was 3. She goes 3 days a week now that she is 4. I feel that she has her whole life to go 5 days a week and I wasnt rushing it, I wanted to enjoy the us time we had left.

Re: 4 year olds and school
My son does 3 days this year (he is 3yrs old) - 2.5 hr days (I may extend one to a full day if they get enough enrollment to run the full day class). He takes swim and gymnastics on the other 2 days as activities.
Next year I plan to send him 4 days - and either 1-2 will be full days. I am leaving the 5th day open to do other classes with him (his swim or gymnastics or maybe a sports class) or maybe the half day nursery program the PTA runs in the school system to get him use to the school building.
I did similar with my older son and it worked out nicely. While he could have easily handled going 5 half days - I liked having him home one day a week to do other activities, more playdates, and such...I figured he had plenty of of 5 full days of school in the years to come.

Re: 4 year olds and school
At 3 years old, both my kids did 3 half days with one extended afternoon for enrichment.
At 4, for pre-K, they did 5 days. Right now my DD has 1/2 days on Monday and Friday and does an extended day (with lunch) on Tu-W-Th.
It's perfect for her. Pretty much all the 4's in her class do 5 days, even though they have the option to do as many or as little as they want.

Re: 4 year olds and school
DD is in a 4 year old program and she goes full time. I think its important to get them use to the routine.
DS is 3 he also goes full-time and will be going full time next year as well.
