Prednisone - please come in if you have been on it

I have a blood disorder that may require me to be on prednisone through my next pregnancy. (not yet pregnant) My hematologist has me doing a 4 week trial just to see how I respond on it. Both my primary care Dr and my hematologist warned that it causes weight gain, but b/c "its going to make you want to eat"

The thing is, I am not any hungrier than I was before the steroids. Its not making me want to eat more. I have maintained the same weight for a year. And within the 2 weeks that I have been on the steroids, I have gained 6lbs. I have not increased my calories and I can confidentally say, that I have been watching everything that I eat. I have been working out 5 days a week (spin class, or zumba or the treadmill.) I am even eating an f'in pomegranate right now , when I would much rather have the peanut butter ice cream that is staring at me from the freezer.

Sorry so long. I plan on asking my Dr tomorrow, but how is it possible to gain weight when you arent increasing your food intake and you are working out.

I am just so frustrated. I worked so hard to get to this weight

eta - wanted to add that the highest mg I was on was 40 and now I have been at 20 for 7 days.

I had a friend that was on Prednisone when she was pregnant and she gained weight. My father was also on it and he did also. I think its the nature of the medicine.

i've had a few friends on prednisone and they gained weight also, not through any of their own doing. it almost was like serious water weight/bloating but again not through their doing. i think, also, its just the nature of the med.

it will cause you to gain even if you don't increase calories. It supresses your system causing your metabolism to slow down too.

It's not just the calories.

I was on it for a while and I gained 15 lbs..I was starvin marvin.

Steroids make you retain water and sodium, so even if you are eating the same you will still gain weight. I was on steroids for 2 weeks over the summer due to asthma and I did gain about 6 lbs as well, and it did take a few weeks for that to wear off. You might notice your face may become swollen. Once you are off these steroids you will get back to normal I swear.

I have taken it and it alters your endocrine system so much of the weight gain is water related, not only related to eating more.

i explode on prednisone, and i have a disorder that causes me to be on it for 6 weeks at a time (6 on, 6 off, repeat) --- lucky for me, i don't need it when pg.

I didn't eat ANYTHING on it and i'd still blow up. I looked swollen, like i was retaining horrid amounts of water. My face even changes when I'm on it. I'm sorry to say that it's a horrible drug for me .

My MIL has been on prednisone for at least 10 years if not 15 and just upped her dosage in November again. She put weight on, but I really don't think it was more than 10lbs. One thing she does notice that if she has something salty today she really blows up tomorrow from water retention so try and limit the salt intake.

A major part is water weight. I won't lie, I went on in anticipation of getting preggo. I gained about 30 pounds before getting pregnant from it.

I gained a lot of weight from it. I was on it for IVF and just took a break. After I went off it everyone was telling me that my face looked so much better and was I getting thinner. I heard to drink orange juice. I had to take it twice a day and I had to find out what times worked so I wasn't up peeing all night. I took one at 6:30 and the second at 4. It worked out better.
