Class trip or Family trip? WWYD?
Ds's school does a yearly 5th grade field trip. From what I hear from other parents who have older kids, it's dictated entirely by the 5th grade teachers, and is always ridiculously overpriced. This year is no exception... it's a bus trip into NYC to see the Addams Family on Broadway, and to have lunch at some diner. $125 per person. We were told that they would like a parent for every child. So, $250 that I don't really have for a trip my kid could give a rat's azz about.
DS came home with the slip with this info today, at which point DH tells me that the week the trip is, he was planning that we could go camping in the White Mountains that week... we had talked about doing that this June but weren't sure when his vacation was going to be.
We talked to DS about it and he would MUCH rather go camping. He really doesn't care about the trip. I feel like even though we don't really have the money for it, and would be missing out on going camping, the 5th grade trip might be an important experience? Is it?? WWYD???

Go camping.
I work in 5th grade and LOTS of kids don't go on the 5th grade trip and instead do a family trip.

FYI, the reason the trip is so expensive it the busing and insurance.
If my kid was not into it, I would skip it.
