Re: Anyone's DC have their tonsils/adenoids out?

my coworker's son had this. She said the tonsils were the part that made it hurt. recovery was about 2 weeks. but nothing to worry about - it's an easy surgery.

I get chronic tonsillitis, but my ENT said that the surgery is so much worse for adults, so hopefully his age will work in his benefit!

Re: Anyone's DC have their tonsils/adenoids out?

both my sons had them out one at 4 and my other son at 2, my dr was great, they keep my two year old over night to watch him because he was tiny child, he did great. the recovery was easier on my 2 year old, my 4 year old 6 days after surgery, he started bleeding and had to have emegercy surgery. both surgeries where done by the same dr. but with tonsils and adenoids there is always risk of bleeding. i think it is 1 in 100. my boys are now 14 and 9. it was the best thing i did for both of them.. good luck. ((hugs))

My ds had his tonsils/adenoids out when he just turned 3. They shaved his tonsils as opposed to removing them completely because the surgery is easier for them. This was an option for him because he didn't get strep along with tonsillitis. Regardless, I'm afraid the recovery wasn't easy. Days 3-5 were the worst for him Chat Icon

Re: Anyone's DC have their tonsils/adenoids out?

Both my boys had them out. My oldest was 3 when he had it, and the other was 2 when he did.

The night after surgery, my older one spiked a fever of almost 105. He refused to eat or drink anything, and we ended up going back to the hospital for IV fluids because when he did try to drink, he was vomiting.

My other son had NO problems whatsoever, He was drinking and eating soft foods right away. Took his pain meds no problem (Tylenol with codeine), and it was smooth sailing.

It depends on the child, from what I heard afterwards, the fever my older one experienced is normal, and the vomiting was because he was dehydrated. He was scared to drink because it hurt so much.

Overall though, recovery was not too bad. Once you get through the first 2 days, they bounce right back.

Good luck!

Re: Anyone's DC have their tonsils/adenoids out?

My son was 3 when he had them out. He was getting crhronic ear infections and strep throat.. (even after getting tubes put in his ears a year eaerlier)..

And let me tell you............

It was the best thing that I EVER did.. Before the surgery, he was always cranky, because he wasnt sleeping well and he was always sick.. After the surgery it was like I had a brand new child... He was sweet, well bahaved and slept through the night. The recovery was even ok.. The only fallback we had was a week after the surgery he must have eaten a potato chip and scrapped the scab off of the back of his throat and he started to bleed.... BUT it ended up stopping almost right away.. so I suggest doing it .. Just be very careful during the recovery and give it about 2 weeks before you give him anything that can have sharp edges....

Good luck!!!!
