The job market and teaching
In the past I felt that if you left teaching (subbing, TA, etc) you had NO chance of getting a job but do you think with the way things are, if you left the field right now with 4 years experience and continued to send resumes over the next, say, 6 years, you'd have a shot at getting hired? Or if I leave do you think I should expect to never get a job?
I'm not able to survive on sub pay anymore and there's less and less subbing jobs available.

I'm ready to bail at this point too. I get called two days a week and it's killing DH and I financially. I feel like a "foot in the door" as a sub doesn't mean anything. I had my "foot in the door" at a district that excessed 47 teachers.
I'm currently pregnant so we're just going to have to deal with me subbing for now, but I'm planning on applying to everything I can, teaching or not, after the baby is born. I also just got my certification in another state.

Honestly, I feel that you do not need continuous subbing, etc on your resume. As long as you can explain the gap, that you needed to have a more stable job, most administrators interviewing would understand that. Maybe try to keep your resume current, though, by joining a professional organization, volunteering, teaching an afterschool activity, etc.
