Re: 5 yr olds.... dressing independently?

E usually dresses herself for school, but she takes FOREVER to pick out her perfect outfit, and it almost always includes tights which are time consuming as well. Chat Icon

If we're in a rush, I'll grab her clothes and put them on her quickly.

(she'll be 5 in June, and has been able to dress herself for at least a year)

DD is 5 and I have one of these hanging closet organizers that have a space for each day of the week. We pick out her clothes on Sunday (letting her have SOME control over what she can wear) and this way all she has to do is wake up, do her morning routine and then get herself ready for school.

I thought this was brilliant and tried this idea last year to get past the daily battle of what to wear. It didn't go over well for me. But maybe its because *I* picked what was in each space. I should try it again having her help me select the outfits for the week.

At 4, yes, Ava can completely dress herself down to her shoes.
Now, do I allow her to dress herself? Hell to the no because the outfits she comes up with are god awful! Even when I give her the clothes and lay them out, she ends up in something else when I'm not looking. Oy!
So, weekdays, I dress her and weekends, she can wear whatever it is she decides to put on her little body.

She watches the news in the morning (yes she is a bit of a strange duck LOL) and when the clock on the television says 7:30 she knows she has to start getting ready.
I think that hanging organizer really made it super easy for her to be independent in the morning letting me tend to her baby sister.

Just wondering where you got the closet organizer....

I keep meaning to get one and could really use it Chat Icon

I got a plain one from Burlington and then we made the days of the week tabs (printed them on the computer and let her color them...think we need to redo them since she did it when she was 3 LOL) I also got them in a larger version for DH and his work clothes for our closet from Bed Bath and Beyond. They were around $10
or you can go here and order them but its much more expensive....

And yes...to previous poster...letting her have a little control over what to wear definitely makes it easier than me picking it out and her telling me she doesnt like what I picked and having an argument

ETA- there are 2 I found on Amazon for much less...just search childrens closet organizer

Re: 5 yr olds.... dressing independently?

My almost 5 yr old dresses himself and has for awhile. Like many others, when time constraints exist, I help out. As for picking out what they wear, only my DD really cares about what she wears. My boys do not care so I put out their clothes based on what they have that day - gym at school, etc. - but really with the boys, they could practically dress in the dark and have matching clothes. Girls with all the colors & prints are trickier. I help my DD by working with 2 different basic choices from her closet, let her pick and then let her do the accessorizing too. Unless it's Godawful and/or inappropriate what she picks is generally fine with me, she's gotten good at matching stuff herself over time. (she's 6 1/2 now)

Kerri is 4 and dresses herself. She is really good with everything except she sometimes messes up with her underwear (backwards, trying to get one leg hole around her waist)Chat Icon but she overall does well.

She will help me pick out her outfit the night before.
