Would you let your child go?

OK..Preschool class..

4 year olds..about 45 of them...

6 adults, including teachers.

Field Trip from Astoria, Queens to St. Johns University at the end of February.

If you weren't chosen to chaperone, would you let your child go? They will be going by yellow school bus.

Re: Would you let your child go?

I would not. They are too little for so few chaperones. If I was a chaperone, it would be no problem. I hated school trips when DS was little. I would sit w/ my stomach in my throat until the end of the school day.

Re: Would you let your child go?

That's a minimum of 7 kids per adult. There is no way I would let that happen with kids that young. Even now I'm uncomfortable if the ratio is less than 5:1.

Is there an option for you to go if you drive yourself? I know they ahve allowed that on our trips in the past.

I don't think I would. I would want to drive them myself and also go with them.

Tough call. I would probably let her go. But I am a super laid back mom and don't worry too much. However, the pre-K where DD goes does not do field trips until K. And even then, it was a small class with 1 chaperone to 3 kids.

Re: Would you let your child go?

Even if I was chosen to chaperone the answer would probably still be no. You would be responsible for 7-8 4yo's!! That is way too many, IMO!

I wouldn't...if I was driving and attending with her maybe.
But why would preschoolers be going there anyway???

Re: Would you let your child go?

I don't think so. I think that is an acceptable ratio if they are in the classroom (I think that's what is required by state law, anyway) but not for a field trip.

To be honest, I wouldn't really want my 4 year old on a bus without me unless he is in his regular routine of taking the bus to and from school.

I probably would let him go, but I would speak up about the ratio. Honestly, I just chaperoned a 6th grade field trip and there were 3-4 6th graders assigned to each chaperone!

Re: Would you let your child go?

I don't think so. I'm a pretty laid back mom, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with her going if I wasn't there.

She's never been on a bus before, she's never been on a field trip before and there aren't enough chaperons.

I would take them myself and if I couldn't for some wierd. If there isn't enough room on the bus or whatever transportaion they use, can you just take her with you in your car? I've done this most times.

Etd b.c I read it wrong - I thought you said 6 adults AND teachers - not 6-7 adults total. No I wouldn't. That is a lot of 4 year olds and not a lot of adults.

Re: Would you let your child go?

Nope. Personally I don't think its a good idea for kids younger than 6 to go on any fieldtrips without parents driving/escorting their child.

Its apparently a puppet show I think.

I may have been wrong, it may be 9-10 adults, including teachers.

She's still not going unless I get chosen to chaperone. Theres no option to take them ourselves. I have no problem going and being responsible for my own daughter and a few others but I just cant see putting her on a bus for the first time without me being there. And if feels so far away. Some parents at school kind of looked at me like the over protective mother. Oh well..my call. Oh and it's a lottery to be a chaperone. Names are pulled from a hat. So.........we shall see. LOL

Re: Would you let your child go?

I went with my 4 years old to a farm, most of the parents came, a few people dropped off the kids. There was 3 teachers plus most parents and they lost a kid for a little bit. 4 year olds have a way of wandering. It really seems silly to not have that much supervision.

Bella went to Whitepost Farm at 4 with probably the same amount of children. I believe there were 10-11 adults at least. They all wore the same clothing and their names printed on the shirts.

I didn't even blink. I couldn't take the day off.
She had a blast.
