Hydrating
OK I will admit I am the WORST when it comes to drinking. I probably drink zero water some days. I drink one cup of hot tea with breakfast, 1 cup of diet soda at lunch and dinner. It is rare for me to drink anything inbetween. I know that is awful!!! I am usually on the go with 2 little ones and I can't stand having to make a ton of potty breaks with the kids.
I'm very susceptible to heat stroke in the hot months (I wonder why ) and I'm really wanting to try to Bikhram Yoga. So before I ever do that, I need to learn how to hydrate myself properly.
SO my question is what are good water drinking habits?
and for those who take bikhram what do you do before/after class to make sure you are hydrated properly?

Re: Hydrating
If I am taking a morning yoga class, I usually drink 2-3 mugs of tea before I go.
If I know I am taking an evening class, I just keep refilling my water bottle at work from the cooler.
I also try to drink at least one full water bottle within the hour before class starts.
It is a hard habit to get into and I admit I have days where I do not hydrate well and then have a sucky class.
I do think other factors come into play though with hot yoga on whether or not you will have a good class....your breathing, amount of stress you are under that day, and ability to just focus on nothing else but the moment.

Re: Hydrating
I never used to drink water but I started getting really dehydrated and light headed at the gym so now I make sure to drink plenty of water! I went to the store and bought a 2.2 liter jug that I fill with water every morning and I make sure to finish it by the end of the day. At first it was really hard but now I'm so used to it that sometimes I drink even more than the 2.2 liters.

Re: Hydrating
I fill up a big red (disposal) cup with water and I try to continue to finish and fill all day...I feel like for some reason its easier for me to get in enough water every day with the red cup than it is with a bottle of poland spring...don't know why but if I open a bottle of poland spring it'll sit there all day! Anyways, the red cup works for me! Good luck!

Re: Hydrating
This may seem silly but getting a camelbak with a bite valve has made me drink soo much more water! I got it on a whim because I was/am nursing and was needing to up my water intake.
Something about the bite valve and how much water you get out of it makes it easy to down a bottle very quickly.

Re: Hydrating
a good rule of thumb: instead of the "Recommended" 8 cups of water per day..
drink half your body weight in ounces...
im 210lbs... so thats 105 ounces which is 13 8oz cups.... or 4 and a half poland spring sport bottles (24oz each).... if your coming close to that mark you should have no problems.
drinking enough water can really be a challenge... i try to get DW to drink more water all the time. but if you can get yourself into doing it... it becomes a necessity. i get made fun of because im NEVER without a water bottle.

Re: Hydrating
PLEASE don't go to class if you don't feel well hydrated. You'll get sick.
The more water you can drink beforehand, the better but keep in mind that anything you drink minutes before class will just sit in your tummy...it won't do as much good as the water you drank an hour earlier. after class you need to restore your electrolites...you can do this with smart water, coconut water and even salt.
