Connecticut Teaching Jobs?
Hey Ladies! I'm new to the site but have been lurking... anyway I thought maybe it's time I ask some questions.
So my DH and I are BOTH certified in Childhood Ed...(myself also in Reading). He is working towards Earth Science cert. So of course the jobs on LI are horrible, he is subbing, I teach AIS but the job is not perfect(doesn't pay enough, not tenure track). So we are looking to move out of state. We need somewhere where we can both find jobs.
We love Connecticut and have some family there so we have started applying there. But does anyone know if the jobs there are any better? if so how much better? any tips on getting a job there? Any areas that are easier than others? There are some districts that are already posting elementary openings for next school year. So this seems hopeful... or are they not "true" openings like they post on LI?
Any experience from anyone who has relocated to Conn. or somewhere similar would help! thanks!

Have you taken the test to get certified in CT? Make sure you do that first!!
From what I've heard CT has the highest paid teachers. Although, I'm also sure CT has higher standard of living than NY. You might want to consider living in Westchester and commuting to CT (could be a 5 minute commute depending on what part)

Schools are mandated by law to post all positions. However, my district hires certified teachers for our TA positions, so often they hire one of them for an open job. Sometimes a completely new person gets hired- but that is rare. Also, my district is talking about cutting positions and it is a ripple effect all the way down to some tenured positions. Scary times in my district.

That's not true. Parts of CT are quite expensive, like Greenwich, but the majority of CT is quite affordable- it all depends on where you're looking to go.
My sister teaches in CT and hasn't said anything about the job front there being bad, and I am pretty sure they're not worse off than us!

Thanks for posting this info! I just got my interim initial cert. from CT as DH and I are looking to relocate to CT as well (I'm pregnant with our first child, so this will be sometime next year). I just have to take the three exams to get fully certified. This makes me feel a bit more hopeful!

Yeah we are open to pretty much anywhere in the state right now... anywhere in Conn. looks better to me than having to move a plane flight away like Florida! What district is your sister in? what subject does she teach? any other insight you(or she) have would be great!

We took the tests like 2 years ago and got a temporary certification which i think has now expired, so I have to check into that.
CT does pay teachers pretty well... I don't know if it is as much as some LI districts but its fairly comparable... this is one of the main reasons we want to stay in the tristate area... you cant go any where in the country and make as much money as teachers do here.

She teaches in Norwalk School District, about 15mins into CT along 95. She is a HS math teacher. Norwalk is a very diverse area, from well off to far from well off. Stamford is the same, about 10mins into CT from NY. Most of Fairfield County is expensive to live, but has affordable houses for sale and most are good school districts. Stay away from Bridgeport and New Haven schools. I went to Quinnipiac in Hamden, central CT, and LOVED the area. I would move there in a heartbeat if I could convince DH to do it. Eastern CT is more surburban, but very affordable- kind of like central Suffolk, where it takes 10mins to get to a store, but you have a nice size yard, your neighbors are a nice distance away, etc.

How did you get your interim initial certification? Don't most states accept NY certification?

Most do. CT requires 3 tests before fully certifying that have to be taken within 1 year of the interim cert.
