Books for 8 yr old boy??

Does anyone have any ideas for books for an 8 year old boy. My nephew loves to read and my brother said he loves the Magic Treehouse and Captain Underpants books but has all of them. Any suggestions?

TIA

I'm finding that the boys like Franny K Stein by Jim Benton (even though the main character is a girl).

also (in addition to PP's list):
Geronimo Stilton
Raymond and Graham
Bad Kitty
Diary of a Killer Cat
Big Nate

Wimpy Kid diaries is for independent readers & was a big hit.

If the parents read to them:
My 7 & 9 year old loved the Lightning Thief series. I thought it was great because they learned Greek mythology.

We just finished The Spiderwick Chronicles & have started 39 Clues.

Re: Books for 8 yr old boy??

Agree with Diary of a Wimpy Kid.. my boys ate it up.
Also agree with Lightening Thief. We read it together and used Hesiod's theogeny with it to really help him understand classic mythology. We've started the new series by the author since we enjoyed the last one so much!
Savvy - it has a female central character.. but my 9 year old just loved it anyway. It was very well written.
The Wrinkle In Time Series - again a female is at the center of most of the series.. but the story was intriguing enough to hold his interest.
The Narnian Chronicles - another one that we read together and tied to reading some stories from the bible so he could understand the concept of parables. It also allowed me to help him understand parallel storytelling and inference.
The Phanton Tollbooth - a favorite of mine that my older son just loved.

Just be careful with these books (for OP) - they are all much higher reading levels than 8 years old. Some even in the 7-8th grade range. You really have to know the reader. Books that are too high can really discourage boys and turn them off to reading. Others eat them up.

I've been looking for some for my 7 year old. He's only into Magic Treehouse books. I want to get him the "Choose Your Own Adventure Books". I loved them as a kid! Chat Icon

Absolutely true and I should have been more clear that when we read 'harder' stuff we do it as a team. I will sit with them and read. No matter how difficult it is they totally eat up the fact that they get to spend time and share an interest with mom..
