And judging from his mugshot, he's also a d0uche.

Tigers' Miguel Cabrera charged with DUI in Florida

Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera was arrested in Florida on Wednesday night, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and two counts of resisting an officer without violence.

He was booked into the St. Lucie County Jail at 12:20 a.m. today and released at 7:45 a.m., after posting $1,350 bond, according to information provided by Mark Weinberg from the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

According an arrest affidavit, a deputy spotted a car Cabrera was driving, smoking on the side of Okeechobee Road in Ft. Pierce, about 100 miles southeast of the Tigers' spring-training base in Lakeland. Cabrera had an odor of alcohol on his breath, his eyes were bloodshot and watery, and his speech was heavily slurred, according to the report.

In the arrest affidavit, deputies said Cabrera repeated, “Do you know who I am? You don’t know anything about my problems.” Cabrera then picked up a bottle of James Buchanan’s Scotch whiskey and started drinking, according to the report.

When asked to get into a patrol vehicle, police say Cabrera used an expletive. Police say he didn’t comply with several orders to get into the patrol vehicle. The arresting deputy said he lifted Cabrera’s left hand to gain pain compliance, and Cabrera then “pushed off the vehicle into me,” according to the report.

The deputy then delivered 3-4 knee spikes into Cabrera’s left thigh muscle. Cabrera fell into the vehicle, according to police.

He refused to submit to a breath test to check his alcohol content, deputies said. The 2005 black Land Rover was towed but since has been retrieved from the impound yard by Cabrera, police said. Deputies did not see anybody with Cabrera at the scene.

In the portion of the police report titled “Psychophysical Evaluation,” the arresting officer checked the boxes marked “cocky,” “combative,” “argumentative” and “belligerent.”

Cabrera, who has a home in Miami and is a native of Venezuela, had not yet reported to spring training in Lakeland. Cabrera and the other Tigers infielders and outfielders don't have their first organized workout of spring training until Saturday. Pitchers and catchers have been working out since Monday.

“Everybody is in shock. You've got to keep looking forward,” said Tigers second baseman Carlos Guillen, a fellow Venezuelan.

Manager Jim Leyland declined to comment today.

Cabrera’s arrest represents a devastating setback in his bid to put behind him the alcohol trouble that erupted at the end of the 2009 season.

On the final weekend of that year’s playoff race between the Tigers and Minnesota, Cabrera became drunk at more than three times the legal limit for driving, according to a test performed by Birmingham police. The police became involved when Cabrera’s wife, Rosangel, phoned 911 after an apparent early morning altercation with Cabrera at their home.

When police arrived at approximately 6 a.m., Cabrera and his wife had minor marks on their faces, according to the police. Cabrera registered a 0.26 blood-alcohol content. No charges were filed.

Cabrera was taken to the Birmingham police station. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski picked him up at approximately 7:30 a.m.

A few days later, in the hours before the Tigers’ playoff tiebreaker loss to Minnesota, Cabrera apologized to his teammates for being drunk.

Encouraged to do so by the club, Cabrera went into off-season counseling for alcohol use. Then, last season, he produced the best season of his already-spectacular career.

He led the majors in RBIs with 126, finished second in the AL batting race with a .328 average and finished third in the league with 38 homers.

For the first time, managers and veteran players from other clubs last season began to compare Cabrera to Albert Pujols, the St. Louis slugger who reigns as the game’s best hitter for run production and average combined.

When a reporter told Cabrera at midseason that Atlanta veteran Chipper Jones had just called him the equal of Pujols, Cabrera broke into a huge smile.

Cabrera, who turns 28 in April, has mounted one of the best careers in history for someone his age.

The authoritative Web site baseball-reference.com reports that Cabrera’s production so far compares favorably with the production of Frank Robinson and Hank Aaron at similar stages of their Hall of Fame careers. Aaron is baseball’s all-time leader in RBIs, and Robinson hit almost 600 homers.

Cabrera, who is due to make $20 million this season, is signed with the Tigers through 2015 on a deal he agreed to three years ago in spring training. He signed the contract just before his first season with the Tigers, who had acquired him in a trade that off-season with the Florida Marlins.
