Would you...(RE: Personal Traine)
When DH as in HS he would often go to this particular gym with his uncle to watch power lifting competitions. At thes competitions DH would see this one man there often (I do not remember if he said he organized it, participated in it or something else) and DH says he was in amazing shape. DH said he had the body of a bodybuilder.
Fast Fwd to now and DH and I now workout at this gym (now under a different name/different owners) but that one man is still there. He is a personal trainer. He is at the very least 400 lbs, not muscle, OBESE.
I understand that no matter what he looks like he obviousy has the knowledge of how to train someone towards their goal, but he doesnt seem to be the spokes person for getting into shape, however, people do use him.
So my question is, would you hire a personal trainer who was obese?

Re: Would you...(RE: Personal Traine)
I will be honest, I probably would not.
I just would want my trainer to be an example of what I want to achieve by going there. In the same sense that people cut out pictures of their goal bodies to use as inspiration.
With that being said.. I have NOTHING against obese people. My MOH was obese. I'm overweight right now myself. I've struggled with weight issues the majority of my life and even dealt with some eating disorders.

No. I would not. I think part of the training process is showing your clients how to do particular exercises, something you can't do if you are as obese as the man you have described. I need my trainer to actually demonstrate difficult positions and they often include a series of quick movements that require balance, strength and a hint of grace. I assume that a man of his size couldn't do that for me, and therefore, I would not hire him for my own particular training goals and needs.

This is how I feel, especially since I have seen him and he has difficulty getting around.
I would want someone I can look at as a model. I just couldnt imagine taking him seriously when telling me to run my @ss off or get in a few more reps on the weights when he struggles to get up from a sitting position.
I am not makig fun of a person for being this way, I too have penty to lose, but I think a person with that job should be physically fit, which does NOT mean skinny or muscular necessarily.

I agree as well. with both comments.
When I had a PT it helped to see him do the exercise first because it helped me see what I might be doing wrong. And if I was doing something wrong he was able to correct it by showing me.
I asked DH the same thing. He looked at me with an odd look and said "No."

I am obese myself...and no, I wouldn't hire a trainer that was obese.
Sorry, but...if you look like me, I don't feel you are qualified to train me on how to get fit. If you are obese, you are obviously not training yourself and you are not marketing your "product"!

Honestly...probably not. I am very overweight and my trainer has a healthy body that I would strive for. She practices what she preaches.

Re: Would you...(RE: Personal Traine)
Normally I would say no, but just as I was typing I thought of a very good friend of mine. He is in amazing shape physically, in that he is disease free (no cholesterol, diabetes, heart or digestion issues). He is fast as he!!, mobile & even flexible, and strong as a bull. He is also 400+ lbs. The Drs. are suprised by what good physical condition he is in, and how agile he is, and yet has a large frame. He always has though, and everyone in his family has as well.
He eats a very clean moderate diet (no excessive fats or sugars, etc), and has no other bad habits. He used to smoke, but quit 5 years ago and has had no long-term damage to his lungs.
So while I would say *no* off the cuff, the reality is when you are in a Gym, you can see for yourself how a trainer works & works out for themselves. If you see that the person is perfectly capable of performing the tasks needed & works themselves with proficiency, then why not? JMHO

Re: Would you...(RE: Personal Traine)
On first thought, I would be inclined to say no but then when I think about it, it would depend on his reputation & if people say he was really good at his job... I wouldn't care what his body is like if he can get my body into great shape.

Re: Would you...(RE: Personal Traine)
Hmm...let me see, hiring an obese personal trainer would be like...having a church hire Charlie Sheen to deliver a sermon about the perils of prostitution and drinking/smoking....
so my answer would be..NO.

Re: Would you...(RE: Personal Traine)
My gym (similar to a NY Sports Club) used to be Gold's Gym (99% were power lifters and bodybuilders) and I have seen three different "levels" of trainers:
1) Body Builder & Power Lifters Trainers 2) Toning/Sculpting, Physical Fitness Trainers (this is the standard trainer we're probably all thinking of and using) 3) Military Style / Peak Trainers - combo of drills and extreme abilities (lifting with chains / pulling and tugging on ropes, etc.)
There are two trainers in my gym for category #1 - one is seriously a BEAST - this man is about 6'8" and 400lbs - he's a "big" guy and you can tell it's just the way his body is. He trains the folks that want to either be body builders or power lifters. The power lifters are NEVER "fit" as we think they are. They are training to lift weight and that's it. So, there will certainly be "obese" looking people in this category and their trainers as such.
That being said - it sounds like the trainer you see could be one specifically helping folks for power lifting or body building.
Now, to answer your question - hubby and I were literally just talking about this tonight after the gym. We saw the trainers (in each category above) tonight, but saw a new one - a female that falls into category #2...and I kid you not...she's larger than I am (overweight), looks like she's out of shape, and she has nails like Wolverine!
So, the short answer is - no, I personally couldn't train with someone that I feel doesn't set an example of "practice what you preach."
My PT is amazing - he's in peak physical shape, he does drills with me, he shows me how to do every exercise when it's new, and that's what I need.
I'm sure other people are okay with a trainer that will just teach them without example, but I would demand my $$ back if it was me.

No I would not. I want my trainer to have a body that inspires me. It has nothing to do with whether or not they are in shape because I do feel that even obese people can be "in shape". It's more of I want to admire the body of the person thats busting my butt at the gym.

Re: Would you...(RE: Personal Traine)
Absolutely not. There is no way I'd be able to listen to him/her pushing me to do one more rep and take him seriously. Not a big fan of ''do as I say, not as I do''. Just seems hypocritical, IMO. I want someone I can look at as a role model.

I agree. (I am a personal trainer) People have their own interpretation of what's in shape, muscle, thin, average, etc.....I don't expect a trainer to necessarily be completely cut and a size 2, with a 6-pack however I expect them to exercise and promote a healthy lifestyle and be knowledgeable about how to exercise correctly and safely.
