Re: Grade 5 - plagiarism..need advice
id contact home immediately to make them aware. i would also defer to admin to see if they have a discipline policy already set up for plagiarism and go from there. maybe have they stay for detentions to work on researching and doing the paper again?

Re: Grade 5 - plagiarism..need advice
Ugh, it makes me sick to see that this starts so early. In my school, the policy is a call home, a zero on the assignment (with no opportunity to make it up), and a detention. (This is also high school, though.) I think the one thing I'd want to stand firm on would be the inability to make up the work. They knew what they were (or weren't) doing, so why should they get a do-over? There have to be consequences so that they'll learn from this...

Re: Grade 5 - plagiarism..need advice
I'm not excusing the kids, but is there any chance those kids really didn't understand what you meant? I teach ELA and do research with my kids towards the later part of the year, but I've seen my kids' reports for social studies, etc. and they genuinely don't realize they are doing anything wrong when they cut and paste from the 'net because the SS teacher often says, "Research this person," without doing ONE lesson on paraphrasing, plagiarism, etc. And I know the teacher TELLS them, "Don't copy from wikipedia," but doesn't think to model lessons on how to do it properly.
I'm sure you were much more thorough than this, but I've seen it done more out of cluelessness, and just wanted to share what I've noticed.

Grade 5 is really very young to see this as a huge deal, IMO. I'd use it more as a learning experience/teachable moment than anything.

ITA.... you could really make a difference with one of those kids by really showing them how you know it was copied, explaining how they can avoid it in the future and giving them an opportunity to correct their mistake (even if it is for a grade of lesser value as a consequence). Sometimes a harsh consequence means less than a chance to learn and make it right.

I agree- maybe use it as an opportunity to go over what plagarism really is and the consequences for when they get older. Then you can do another lesson on paraphrasing. I teach high school and alot of students still do not know how to paraphrase- its definatly a skill that needs to be worked on as much as possible early on.
