Pre-School Recommendations

Hi Everyone....I am brand spanking new to this site. I have a 5-year old boy and 3-year old twins (boy and girl).

My little guy was diagnosed with PDD/NOS at 2. He gets ABA therapy 5x a week, twice a day. He is still lacking in the speech department (we are starting to use PECS), but his eye contact has improved greatly and so have his play skills. He has no behavior issues.

We are in the process of finding a good pre-school fit for him. We have seen Just Kids and NIS. We are on the waiting list for DDI, but the therapists and service coordinator believe he may be too high functioning for that (I'm not so sure though).

If anyone can recommend a good pre-school with an Autism program, I would love to have your feedback.

Thank you,
Suzanne

Re: Pre-School Recommendations

My DD also has PDD/NOS. She currently goest to Alternatives for Children in Setauket and I love them. The teachers are good and all the assistants are great (that we have dealt with anyways) and so far I have no complaints with the other therapist (OT and Speech). I like that fact they have a very open door policy, I can sit in on a class without notice, they get computer class, music class and have outdoor play. We will be transitioning to K next year and so far they have been very helpful with my million and one questions I have for my upcoming CSE meeting : ).

Re: Pre-School Recommendations

Thanks so much for the recommendation, Karen. My district did tell me to visit them as well. My service Coordinator is going to set up a tour with them.

Best of luck with your CSE meeting. I have one in June where I am going to fight to continue his ABA therapy for at least a few nights a week next fall when he is going to school full-time. I am sure they will say no, but it's worth a shot! :)

When Sophia started preschool we still had ABA at home for about 3 or 4 months. We just said we wanted to continue services until she transitioned into preschool because Sophia is all about consistancy. It would be too much for her to cut everything out all at once. They gave us no problem at all with that.

Good luck!! Chat Icon

Re: Pre-School Recommendations

Thanks so much for that advice. That would make perfect sense to keep him in it for a few months until he made the transition.
