How much would you give..

My son is going to a boys bar mitzvah from school. He talks to the boy in school and has only hung out with him 1x outside of school. So my question is how much for a gift? His regular friends we do $25 that's is what his friends do as well but being this is a diff type of birthday should I give $50?

Also any tips on what my son should wear? It's a jersey shore theme and they need to wear club style clothes. I was thinking jeans with a tight t shirt?? I don't know, was never a club person nor have I ever watched the show.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Re: How much would you give..

In the Jewish religion, 18 (chai or life) is a very symbolic number. When I was Bat Mitzvah'd (about 100 years ago...), I got many gifts of $18 from friends. Now I would think that $36 is probably more appropriate.

I don't watch Jersey Shore but I think a t-shirt and jeans or even slacks could be fine. For the service though, a button down shirt is more appropriate. If he is going directly to the party after, he could even take off the button down...

When I was a bat mitzvah in 1990 I got a lot of gifts of $36 cash/check or savings bonds for either $50 or $100.

When I was going to Bar/Bat Mitzvahs (20+ years ago), I always gave $18 to my not-so-close friends, and $36 to good friends. As a pp said, $36 is *probably* the norm today.

Sorry, can't help w/ the attire. I have to say, that does seem to be an odd choice for a Bar Mitzvah theme, no?! Chat Icon

The boy is turing 13 and my son is only going to the party. It's being held at a club and being it's a jersey shore theme they will be holding contests for best hair, best outfit. I don't know if this is normal or not never been to one ;)

Now another question everyone has said $18 y that number?
