Runners - what do you do to build endurance?

Besides obviously running! I do the stepper and walk on the treadmill at a fast pace/high incline. I'm just wondering what else I can do because the other two things are getting to be a bore for me.

raise the incline on the treadmill a little for when you jog on it..weight training to build muscle. Raise the resistance on stepper.. challage yourself seems like your getting bored b/c your getting used to what your doing now.
Work out DVD's or on TV (Optimium) also to mix things up a lilttle.

High Intensity Interval Training! I would do Tabata (still do) helps with endurance and strength building.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I already incorporate HIIT and tabata into my workouts so those were good suggestions.

Erica - how much slower than my normal pace should I go at for the longer slower runs? My current pace is between 9:45 and 10:45. And, more importantly, how are YOU feeling? Chat Icon

I'm ok...but I get restless reading what everyone is doing. I'm on bedrest this weekend which doesn't help.

Spinning...

I slacked on Tabata after my stuff got stolen.... although I don;t need the Ipad App t do it, but was so depressed about it - I am going to start again this week though....

I started doing the Tabata after you told me about it. It's amazing for building strength in my legs. Definitely is making a difference. One of these mornings, I'll get my butt out of bed at 4:30 to do spinning with you.

What helped me build my endurance is sticking to a set # of miles each time. Even if it meant walking a little, over time I reduced the walking and was able to run the whole thing.

Slowing down is huge too, you won't believe how much easier it is to run 30 seconds - 1 min per mile slower.

You should be able to talk the whole time, i.e. not panting for breath.
