Where ARE they hiring?

What states are hiring teachers? preferably somewhere on the east coast and in a decent area... DH and I both need permanent elementary teaching jobs.

We are facing the fact that we are going to have to leave LI but it seems as if hte market is good NO where! and that's scary... ideally we would like conn. or mass, but im afraid they are almost as bad as LI. are the carolinas still hiring?? like we would both have an easy time getting hired there? he's seen a bunch of things in FL but im not too sure how great the areas are. and i found some openings posted in Baltimore... which wouldnt be too bad... but do the openings mean nothing like they do on LI? ahh we're just looking for a direction to focus our energy and dont want to waste time and money applying to areas that are saturated.

Re: Where ARE they hiring?

I know parts of South Carolina and Florida are only hiring Critical Need and elementary is not considered a critical need.

Re: Where ARE they hiring?

you could try northern VA and the DC suburbs. a few years ago, they were givign the jobs away down there; don't know if that has changed.

The carolinas is slowing, but i think still possible. Also, Florida....

Stay FARRRR away from DC suburbs (PG County esp.) and DC schools. I think MD is in a hiring freeze anyway.

DH & I are in FL in a charter school. Not sure if you want charter but check out charterschoolsusa.org. They have schools all over FL and some in GA.

What DH did was find the area he would want to possibly move to and just apply even if they weren't hiring. He'd call/email to follow up.

Good luck!

While PG county isn't great, Montgomery County and Howard County are nationally ranked districts. MD was in a hiring freeze last year, but things seem to be improving.

Baltimore is always hiring b/c it can be tough to retain teachers there.

They are cutting quite a few jobs just outside of Charlotte, NC. Meanwhile, almost 4 years ago, I didn't even have a REAL interview to get my job. I went to the school, had a pleasant chat w/ the principal about my schooling and about why I chose to move here, and she hired me on the spot...then told me I could have my pick, K-5.

Definitely not that way anymore Chat Icon

Re: Where ARE they hiring?

I have friends in both Florida and NC. A few years ago I was offered my choice of class in both Florida and North Carolina. I wish I could have taken it then but I am stuck on LI. Now it is completely different. From what they tell me it is almost as hard as it is here. GL

We found many openings in elementary posted for Baltimore County schools which looks different than balitmore city schools. Honestly we would teach in or out of the city just to start making some decent money. We would probably live outside the city i saw columbia md was rated #2 place to live in the US!! and that is in howard county so the surrounding areas look very nice to live in, so we may apply in Baltimore. i hope theres no hiriing freeze... if they're posting jobs for 2011-2012 that shouldnt be true.

I grew up in Baltimore County, let me know what schools. I lived in Columbia when I taught in Howard, it's great. It sounds like the hiring freeze is over. The great thing about applying in MD, is you can apply to the county, instead of individual districts, so it's less work on your part. Good luck and FM me if you have any questions about particular schools or places to live, I miss MD a lot!!!!!

ETA: Salaries are not as high as parts of LI. Housing can be just as high, but taxes are a lot less and you get a lot more for your tax money due to the county system, instead of towns. Also, if you are renting at first, a lot of apartments give discounts to teachers and police officers.

Re: Where ARE they hiring?

I went to school in Baltimore- Loyola College- for elem and did all my field placements and student teaching down there, probably 7-8 schools in all, between Baltimore County and Baltimore CIty. BIG difference- Baltimore City schools are for the most part, really good. There are also a LOT of private schools you may want to look into too, they are very very common down there. Baltimore City schools are very different. Inner city kids coming from major, major poverty. When I was there, which was about ten years ago, give or take, at this point Chat Icon they were really really scrounging. Funding was bad and they were in dire need of quality teachers. I was offered an immediate position. As a junior in college. And they knew it.... Chat Icon
If you do end up in MD, I'm jealous! The area is awesome and as PP mentioned, some of the County districts are the best in the nation! THere are also a lot of great and fun areas to live in as well. Good luck on your hunt!

I'm in the same boat you and your DH are. We're staying here because of DH's job. A few friends have had luck in Virginia, but one of them was a music teacher. I would check there.

Re: Where ARE they hiring?

thanks so much for all the responses!! seems as if it is tougher now everywhere... with DH and i both elementary certifed we're in a bad situation. Here on LI i have a 4 day week position in a district hoping it would lead to somethingmore but with all these cuts, thats just not goingt o happen. i also work nights doing civil serivce and dh subs and is going for his masters... so we know we cant be doing this much longer and there is no gleam of hope on LI. we applied to balitmore county today, so hopefully they will contact us. I may even email some people there to be a little pushy, i dont know if thats bad but we need to get recognized! maybe they will remember the couple relocating from LI... if anyone has any contacts around that area please let me know because we know no one who even lives in maryland at all!

Re: Where ARE they hiring?

I teach in northern va, about 20 minutes from dc. When I first moved here I taught in PG County (prince george's) stay away from there, but all of the northern va counties are hiring. Look into Arlington county, Fairfax county and Loudoun county. They are all great districts down here.
