Looking for places to run in Suffolk

I am getting tired of running the same old route. It is also not really the safest place to be running by myself. I really need a change of scenery to get me through my training.

Please tell me where you run in Suffolk County, preferably mid suffolk.

Thanks!

Re: Looking for places to run in Suffolk

Where do you currently run now? In a neighborhood or park? When I want to change it up, I go with a couple of different options. I go to the south shore and run at Heckscher State Park (at the end of the Southern State Parkway). I grew up in the area so I know it well and love running there.

If I want something closer to home, I'll either run at Heritage Park on Rt. 347 or in Pt. Jeff, near St. Charles Hospital. There's also Sunken Meadow. I've not run there yet but I want to. Chat Icon

Re: Looking for places to run in Suffolk

I currently run in my neighborhood but not really. there are office buildings near my house.... I go bak there to run because it is quiet and I don't like people looking at me when I run. the time that I run these businesses are usually closed so it is pretty dead over there. But I know it is not really safe for me to be running there by myself. If I were to ever get attacked or hurt no one would be around to help or find me for hours.

I would love to run at a park or someplace like that that is not too far of a drive.

I am also going to start running in my actual neighborhood and get over the fact that I don't want anyone looking at me!

Re: Looking for places to run in Suffolk

I run once a week at Sunken Meadow. There is the boardwalk (0.75 miles one length), paved paths all around the park, plus the trails in the woods.

My neighborhood is great for running but its very hilly. So I usually only run here once a week, once at sunken meadow, and once on the tredmill. Then I try to do a race every other week.

Sweetbriar nature center in Smithtown has self guided trails for walking. I havent run there yet but will try it out soon.

Other places I used to run before we moved:
West Meadow beach in Stony Brook has a road (closed to cars) alongside the beach. LOVE IT! Need to be a brookhaven resident.
Holtsville ecology center has a paved walking/running path. i think its a bout a mile once around. There are always tons of people there.
Heritage park has a paved path around the park, again lots of people there.
Stony Brook University campus has a nice path too.

You can also try a school track.

There is a track with in walking distance from my house but I am not really a fan on running on them..... I hate running in circles!

Re: Looking for places to run in Suffolk

When I was running last year, I ran in my neighborhood (off Terry Rd in Smithtown). I ran at the park where they are building the new Nesconset library, they have a paved track. I would also run at Raynor Park in Ronkonkoma, on Ronkonkoma Ave, they have a nice paved slightly hilly path that goes through a wooded area. Lastly, was Sunken Meadow, the boardwalk. There are also great trails that take you through some beautiful areas at Sunken meadow, they start at the end of Twin Oaks Dr in KP, off Sunken Meadow Rd and you end up in one of the lots.
