I didn't get the other job either

May will mark 1 year of unemployment for me, and I'm getting so depressed. Job searching is the most demoralizing experience. I have a friggen PhD and yet I'm not good enough to hire. It just seems like my education was a complete waste. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Easier said then done, but please don't get disappointed. The right job is out there for you, it's just going to take a couple more shots for you to find it Chat Icon

I am not sure what field you are looking into but are there Head Hunters? In the past I have had the best luck with the job hunt when I have gone with a Head Hunter.

Beth, can I ask what sites you are using to look? (besides the obvious ones)
Off the top of my head I can think of:
Newscientist
Biocareers
Biospace
Academics.com
Postdocjobs.com

Have you tried any of the government job sites? I was surprised to find a lot of relavant jobs for the government. I forget the name of the site, but I can look on my home computer if you are interested.

Sometimes I see scientific/technical writer positions on those sites I mentioned. Do you only want to work directly for journals/publishers or are you interested in doing scientific writing in any setting?
I know government labs (the closest being Brookhaven) also have several scientific writers on their staff, so you might want to look there as well.
If I hear of/see anything I will let you know.

I would like book and journal publishing if I can get it, but it's not looking likely. Ideally I'd like to be in acquisitions, so I want a job that will give me editorial experience. Science writing won't do that.

Thanks for your help. Chat Icon

Re: I didn't get the other job either

I feel for you, I am an attorney and going on 8 months of unemployment. It's a ridiculous market and a very tumultuous ride. Some days I am fine and others I just cry and can't figure out what to do next. I hope that one day we can both look back on this as a learning experience and know that we have found great professional success. Chat Icon

Thanks. I wish the same for you.

I know this is especially hard, because it's my first job EVER, since I graduated last May. So I don't even have any work experience.

Re: I didn't get the other job either

This is sort of out there, but I thought I'd share something that (almost) worked for me when I thought I wanted to get into scientific publishing and couldn't figure out how.

I contacted a journal editor -- not the MAIN editor but one of the subject editors who lived in my area. At most journals, subject editors are university faculty, and they're journal duties are additional work beyond their research, advising, clinical care, etc.

So I contacted one and asked if she needed an editorial assistant -- someone who could help get authors to meet deadlines, send out requests for invited reviews, coordinate and send out comments, etc. It's essentially a clerical job, but you get to interact with authors and call yourself an editorial assistant.

She agreed, I got an interview, and would have taken the job if they pay wasn't so paltry. Like, seriously bad. She even wanted me to do some proposal writing for her lab in my down time.

It takes a bit of legwork and kind of getting out there on a limb -- and I should reiterate that the pay was terrible -- but it's another path to pursue.

Thanks for the advice. I have applied to several editorial assistant positions that have been posted, but have not heard back from them. The 2 interviews I had were for higher level positions. I wonder if contacting someone directly would help.

Re: I didn't get the other job either

Are you networking?

Actually calling up alumni from your graduate program who may be in a position to hire you or refer you to potential employers in the field? Most jobs are given to people via contacts these days, many employers are too lazy to read through stacks of resumes when they can just ask an employee whether " this person you know in real life may be a good fit here".

Actually, I was networking and had a contact at one publishing company that gave me an interview. I am pretty sure that is what got me the interview.
