How do you correct a child who doesn't want to be corrected?

DD is great at many things, but often, she needs to be corrected. She gets so defensive when I correct her- she literally puts her hands over her ears and says she doesn't want to hear it and that she can do it any way she wants. I usually start by praising her for something and gentlly say, "but you mispronounced X or you should to Y".

She isn't like this with teachers- only mom and dad.

I want to nail this in the bud before she starts kindergarten in the fall and I need to help her iwht homework. Any suggestions?

As frustrating as it is, I think that is normal for a young child. My son is in Kindergarten adn occassioanly acts like this. Today for example we were reading his two books of the night and he tried to argue with me that he had to read the right page before the left and finally I just let him read it that way and told him to see what his teacher said in the morning.

He puts a lot more effort in when he is in the classroom with a teacher compared to me trying to work with him at home.

So I wouldn't stress too much about it. Pick your battles and just keep open lines of communication with the teacher. I find this very helpful. Tip off the teacher about what you are struggling with at home and I'm sure if the teacher brings it to her attention she will listen!

I always try to remember that I did something right since my kids do well in school and know their place and appropriate behavior. At home can be a different story though!Chat Icon
