Pros/Cons of Summer School?!
Hi,
I was recently offered a position at a (private) school. A regents class, but most students will have failed the class, not necessarily the regents.
I've heard mixed things, some say easy money, some say blood money.
Thoughts?

my only experience doing summer school was teaching 7th grade in queens. it was god awful and DEFINITELY not worth it. working the corner would be a better option than going back there!

I worked a 6th grade class in Queens. It was definitly rough and not worth the money for me.

I teach summer school with my self- contained students. This will be my 6th year and I have ALWAYS done summer school so I don't know any different. It is definitely worth it money wise, however, my brother, works summers and makes a ton more than me in the city as a special ed teacher. My kids are wonderful, but the other teachers who teach always complain about the kids!

Depends on the amount of money being offerred. I have never done summer school, but I know that my district does not pay well for the amount of work required.

I do summer school for BOCES- Extended Year Program. I LOVE it! It's easy/fun and good money too. It's a full day (8:30-2:30) but its worth it.

Last year was my first year teaching it. I'm a city teacher...so I was in my school (Queens) and tuaght 8th grade math.
Pros: good money, short day (8-12), off Fridays
Cons: you could get a tough class. I had two classes last year...and some tough kids. the classes were large...20-30 kids! insane for summer school, but overall it wasn't too bad and was worth the money.
I'm doing it again this year and will be 7-8 months pregnant! I might be insane. hahahah

I haven't done summer school since 1998, when they still had RCTs.
The regents class, where the kids wanted to pass the class and the regents were fine - great!
the RCT class, the kids didn't care - s*cked! and the reason I don't think I'll ever teach summer school again!
