Outdoor Running Etiquette

I've been a treadmill runner and recently made a transition to running outdoors. It is very new to me and I thoroughly enjoy it. Any tips-like do you greet other street runners. I don't want to be rude and ignore and be the neighborhood be-otch, but also don't want to be annoying to others who just want to be left alone. What do you do?
Also if you are running on one side of a street and there is an approaching runner, do you switch to the otherside and come back or do you stay on your side and bypass the runner. Sorry for the silly questions, but this is new to me. Any other tips are greatly appreciated.

Re: Outdoor Running Etiquette

As far as greeting other runners I never say anything but if I catch their eye I'll usually smile. Most people are so into their running and paying attention to their enviroments (car, etc.) they won't notice other runners.

If I see another runner I just move towards my right and we figure something out. Pretty much the same way you could move to the right if you were both walking and had to pass each other.

Re: Outdoor Running Etiquette

If I am running alone, I will lift my hand in a hello gesture to other runners. When my friend and I run together (no iPods) then we say good morning to people we see. We tend to see the same people so it's nice!

greeting is a personal thing. Some people don't do it at all. I usually say "morning" or "how are ya" passing a runner or a neighbor. maybe a hand raise wave.

You should always run on the left side of the road (so you can see oncoming traffic coming towards you). if another runner is on the wrong side coming your way, I move into the street, b/c i have the better vantage point to see cars coming, but stay on the left side.

When I see people as I run, I give them a smile and a wave. Some people ignore it, others do the same back.

As for running, I stick to running opposite of traffic. Most people in my area do the same, so it is rarely an issue. If I do have to pass someone, I usually say passing on the right or left depending upon if cars are coming or not.

Same here - I find most runners to be very friendly and always say hello, good morning etc....

It was just burned into me by my track coach. If we were on the wrong side, we would get yelled at Chat Icon

I still steick my arm out when there is a hairpin turn and I can't see cars coming towards me. Force of habit 20 years later! Chat Icon Chat Icon
