Bike riding for weight loss
I broke my ankle in march and the ortho doc says no power walking as its too much stress on my ankle. He did say that if I "have" to exercise I would ride my bike. The thing is I have always just rode my bike for fun and not at a very fast pace so looking for some advice here if I want to use bike riding as a weight loss tool.
How far should I ride?
how many days per week?
Any other tips?
Did you lose weight riding your bike?
TIA

Do a bike trail! Where do you live? The one in Bethpage is great and full of hills!

Re: Bike riding for weight loss
I would love answers on this too. I've been doing C25K but my knees are bothering me doing it. I was thinking of taking up bike riding but I'm not sure if it'll help me lose the weight.

Would love to know as well.
I was going to start riding to work, and then back- since I need my car for kids and pickup.
Actually today was to be my 1st but tires were flat.

Re: Bike riding for weight loss
My husband is an cyclist and he does the trails and road biking.
He told me to start off slow so I dont hurt myself and we go on 30 min bike rides around the neighborhood, he targets blocks with large hills and he makes me do hill climbs. I have to say its pretty intense since I'm using a single speed bike.
If you can do the trails out on LI I would suggest that and doing the green trails and then after you get the hang of mountain biking go for the blues. I did not enjoy mountain biking because my husband pushed me a little too hard (taking me on the black diamonds my first time around because "I could do it")
If you know someone who does trail riding I would ask them to guide you around. Good luck!!!!
Oh here's a great article of a man who lost 320 lbs by riding his bike http://www.bicycling.com/training-nutrition/nutrition-weight-loss/i-lost-320-pounds-riding-bike

Re: Bike riding for weight loss
I ride for cardio but not weight loss. I have a computer that tracks my speed and distance. I keep a fairly fast pace. I found this article that may be helpful: http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/cycling-for-fitness
