"It's just a cat"

Just needed to come on here and vent!

I never really understand all the cat haters out there.

I mean, I know all animals are not for everyone- there are dog people, and cat people and horse people and rabbit people. I get it.
But even though I prefer cats, I still LOVE dogs. They just aren't right for my lifestyle but I really love dogs. I also love all animals really. Horses, chickens, you name it. I'm an animal lover.

But I hear SO many people who say they hate cats, can't stand cats, that cats are "just cats" and are therefore disposible etc. It just really irks me.

Today I was going to the bathroom at work and 2 people from another company in my bldg were standing in the hall talking. From what I heard as I walked down the hall the woman was saying how her sister was having a hard time finding an apartment that would accept her cat. She said- "I told her to just get rid of the cat already but she won't." And the guy says, "Well I HATE cats, I can't stand them. She should just leave and let the cat out. I mean it's only a cat"

I wanted to freaking turn around and say something to this a-hole but of coruse I didn't.
But to suggest that someone should abandon their animal in the street becasue it's an inconvienience to a move? REALLY?
But not if it's a dog of course. If it's a dog then you have to go out of your way for it. But it's "just a cat" so it basically equates to a piece of unwanted furniture?

I just don't get it. Maybe it's because I could NEVER in a million years imagine abandoning my cats- not even rehoming them- abandoning them?

I wanted to punch this a- hole in the face actually

Vent over!

you are a much better person than me.. as a cat momma, i would have turned around and said something very snarky.. and honestly, i'm glad to hear this particular "sister" is trying to so hard to find an apt that will allow cats.. made me feel good..

Re: "It's just a cat"

wow. I can say personally I can't stand cats...they just creep me out for some reason. However, I would never ever say that "it is just a cat" or suggest anyone "get rid of their cat". Just bc I don't like cats doesn't make that cat any less of a special pet to that person than my dog is to me. And besides, all animals should be treated well regardless.

Re: "It's just a cat"

Everytime I go on craigslist, I am reminded of how many people think their pets are disposable. I have a baby...buy buy doggie...I am moving buy buy kitty...I recently learned that years ago one of my mom's friends never even bothered to look for another home for her cat. She opened the door, shoved the cat out and that was itChat Icon

All the problems I am having with Sushi and her little box issues, there's always someone who chimes in with I'd get rid of her or I'd put her down. Chat Icon She is a part of my family. I could never send her away or "destroy" her.

But yes, for some reason I never hear about the doggies that have accidents in the house needing to be put down.

I will also state for the record while I have always been an animal lover, I always considered myself a dog person. I dont know that I ever would have gotten a cat had I not lived in an apartment. But now I dont even know what I would do without them...even with all the fighting, and the pooping...and the peeing. They are part of me..not "just a cat."Chat Icon

Kudos for keeping your composure, I would have flipped my sh!t

Wow what an assss! I've never heard someone say "It's just a cat" because if they did, I'd probably throat punch them. Chat Icon

I'm a dog lover, but like you, I love all animals. Even birds... dirty, mean birds. Chat Icon

Horrible. We have a feral cat colony in our neighborhood and it breaks my heart to see these cats out on their own. One of them broke its leg early on and walks with a serious limp. One DH and I call "One-Eyed Jack" because of his obvious battle scars. I could NEVER just let a cat out and let her fend for herself. I also tell my cat I love her every time I leave the house though. She is a member of our family.

Re: "It's just a cat"

I was not cat lover but fell in love with my cat. He's more like a dog but thats besides the point.

Sometimes people just baffle me.

ITA with all of this

My dogs are alot ALOT of work. They drive me NUTS sometimes. But they are my babies and they are MY responsibilty, my FURRY children. And I am committed to them for life. They are a big part of my life. I chose for them to be mine, and mine they will always be, through thick and thin.

PEOPLE SICKEN ME. I hate people.Chat Icon

You are my hero that you were able to control yourself and not say anything, I don't know if I would be able to contain myself.

Some people stink.

Re: "It's just a cat"

I honestly do not like cats. Well, except Kara's cat because they just too gorgeous to not love them.

But as of respect of how much I love MY choice of animals, I do understand how someone might love their cat just like I love my dogs.

It was just mean and condescending. As if a cat is not "good enough" and disposable.

I think if you have ANY animals, you are responsible for them unless you can find another family for them. So yes, I would pass a house/apartment if they would not accept my dogs.
