ever give a bff parenting advice?

Or approach a friend with your opinion on something with regard to their kids?or do you keep it zipped and think who am I to say anything? Just curious

Re: ever give a bff parenting advice?

If I would be talking to a friend when I was CF, and they asked my opinion on something....I would give it.

But to come out and give them unsolicited parenting advice? No. I always figured that they do their thing and it's not my place to say a word. The only way I could imagine not being able to keep my mouth shut, would be if they were putting their child in danger. But I've never had a friend who got to such a point.

Zipped, mostly. If anything, I will answer leading questions but nothing in the form of a statement that might offend.

Until I walk a mile in their shoes and all that... Chat Icon

Re: ever give a bff parenting advice?

The only thing I will chime in on occasionally is school-related stuff, because I used to teach. And even then, I try and make sure it's presented in a tone that's not all "this is what you should do because I know better," KWIM? But actual parenting advice I keep in my own head unless asked directly for my opinion.

never! because I know nothing about parenting, so I won't even pretend to have a clue.

Re: ever give a bff parenting advice?

I have once to my sister needless to say it was not well received & she basically told me I have no idea what I'm talking about as I am not a parent. I totally disagree but I keep my mouth zipped now even though I think she needs to take her head outa the sand & face some hard facts.

The only other thing I say to my close friends who are parents is to please try to give their kids self confidence. This was never done for me & it has held me back in every aspect of my life.

I've given encouragement to friends who's kids are receiving EI services for speech, etc. that they are doing the right thing ... but never advice.

If someone asks my opinion, I will tell them. We have friends who ask my DH's opinion b/c he did 10 years child psych as a social worker in a children's hospital before becoming a cop, he has alot of experience in that area even though we don't have children.

One of my best friends asks me for advice from time to time concerning her son with school because I am a teacher. That's about it.

Re: ever give a bff parenting advice?

Mostly zip-lipped. If my co-worker asks for my opinion, I'll give it, but 1. I don't have kids, I don't know what it's like and 2. even if I did have kids, we have two very different home lives and what works for one might not work for all.

Yeah no Chat Icon
I can't imagine them asking me with their little ones.

One of my oldest friends said that when her girl is a teenager that she'd come to me with questions because of my experiences, my honesty and my outook. I was shocked when she said that!

Re: ever give a bff parenting advice?

I would NEVER approach someone to give them advice about their child, whether I had kids or not.

It's no one's business but their own and unless they ask, I'm not offering! Chat Icon
