Boarding - in a home

Ok so we've gotten around to finally setting our vacation dates and wouldn't you know it, the woman we were going to board with is booked for 10 out of the 16 days we'll be gone.

I think we'd still want to use her for the last week, but we would love to find someone who can take our 2 dogs into their home. We are trying to avoid cages, kennels, and situations where they would be alone for many hours/overnight.

Besides paying through the nose for our regular sitter to spend a lot of time here, I've searched through all the old threads and only came up with two choices that may have to do if we can't find more individual choices - K9 Clubhouse and our vet, Towneline. They're not *bad* choices, we just wanted to do something more for them. It's our first long trip in years and I want to make it as stress-free as possible for them. Chat Icon

Re: Boarding - in a home

One of my client does dog sitting. I am not sure if she still take dogs in her house since she just had a baby but she still does dog sitting. She is really good. She used to work at Town Line.

My dogs will be staying at Town Line for 1 night later this year.

Re: Boarding - in a home

Thanks ladies!! If you guys could post any information (or FM if that's better), I'll pass it on. I asked the woman from the boarding place if she had any recommendations for me and she didn't. Here is her link:

http://www.littlemonsterspetsitting.net

As it turns out, DH suggested I ask my parents and although I have a really hard time asking people for favors, I did. And they said they would watch the dogs for ALL 16 days!!! And drive us back and forth to JFK. I'm totally floored right now.

I'm such a sap, but you guys will understand why I'm on the verge of tearing up. This was weighing really heavy on me because it's the longest we've ever left them, Ginger had separation anxiety which we worked so hard to break, and we just wanted to know they would be with people who cared about them.

And when I told my parents that they needed at least 1 walk per day, my Dad said he'd walk them 3 or 4 times a day if that was alright. And that they would need our vet's info, even though it's not convenient to their home, because God forbid something happened, they would want the dogs with a vet they know and that cares so much for them.

Ok now I'm totally Chat Icon !!! I owe them big time. Chat Icon

Re: Boarding - in a home

That is awesome!!! Wow, 16 days.Chat Icon

I am in a similar predicament. Hate bothering my mom for 4 days....but can;t bear the thought of leaving them at a boarder and them being ALONE all night. They like to sleep in our bed (or my parents if they stay there). My babies would be so miserable being alone all night and my female would probably come back with a really bad nervous breakdown (she freaks with some things).

It's so tough going away when you have pets. So glad they are very willing to do it for yoU!

Re: Boarding - in a home

Not sure if you would be willing to take the trip but did you see the link I posted? She seems great, is only out of the house for about four hours on weekdays, and the dogs sleep in her bedroom with her. No cages. I haven't met her (and now it appears I won't have a reason to) but from her site and my emails with her, there haven't been any red flags.

I hope you find a good solution too, I know how hard it can be. Chat Icon

do you mind sharing the price about how much she charges?
me and DH are looking to go away more often, we never really did before and we are finding it hard to find someone to watch our dogs. I hate the idea of kennels but is that what people with pets do when they want to go away? uggChat Icon

Re: Boarding - in a home

Sorry, I didn't see this till now! I'm a little surprised at the price, typically I see $30 a night. But that is for a kennel, and they wouldn't necessarily get the kind of attention or exercise they would there.

She did say that there are discounts for longer periods. One of the reasons why she's booked up is because she only takes one family's pets at a time. A great thing, but inconvenient if you can't plan ahead. Heck, I was planning three months out and didn't get lucky!

Re: Boarding - in a home

Doing the math, if it's $45 per dog per night, my parents just saved us $1440. Chat Icon
