post-anethesia question - coughing

I was told I kept coughing as I was waking up from the anesthesia. No recollection of this.

However, I have been coughing NON STOP...even if I sip water, I will start coughing after a few sips. It's so annoying and it feels phlegmy , but it's hard to get up and out (sorry if TMI)

is this a side effect from the anesthesia or the intubation?

it's so annoying and I wonder if it's aggravated by seasonal allergies....I see doc this week, so I will ask then, but love to hear experiences.

Both before and after my surgery, they told me I should force myself to cough and breathe very deeply - to get my lungs working again and get out any gunk that may be stuck.

But I never had the situation you describe where the coughing was involuntary. Maybe you should ask the Dr.

ETA: I did have sore throat from the intubation.

My son had surgery last Tuesday and has been coughing ever since. I spoke to the doctor today about it and he said totally normal, something irrated your throat and it is normal to try and 'cough it out'

I was told this after my last surgery, although I was not intubated.
