No Teachers Choice
There will be no teachers choice this year. A friend just emailed me and I confirmed it by going onto UFT website.

Ridiculous that they expect you to do a job & then don't give you the means to get the resources & materials you need to do that job properly. Seriously, how can you be expected to spend your own money out of pocket for job materials?! I guess all you can do is write it off when tax time comes.

Most places do do this. My mother has been a teacher for 20 years and has bought all her own material...and has taught grades K-8 all grades (special ed) at some point. When I went to the city, I was surprised you got teachers choice money.
ETS: Not that it isn't nice to get that money though! I didn't mean to minimize the reduction of it.

Re: No Teachers Choice
When I started I think we got $250 AND my school had great materials and gave us some stuff too. Our school materials are falling apart. Thank goodness for staples penny sales. I think I am definitely going to look into Donors choose too

Re: No Teachers Choice
As much as it totally stinks, thinking about how they didn't have to lay off teachers - I don't mind losing that small amount of money! I'm glad to have all of my coworkers back in the fall, and happy my class wont be overcrowded as a result of trying to throw extra kids into each class since there are less teachers!

Re: No Teachers Choice
Honestly, after 7 years, there isn't much I need anyway, so in a strange way, it's a relief that I don't have to buy as much just to spend the money. Our PTA does a stipend, too, which is great.
I think that it should still be offered to first and second year teachers though.
