Healthy Eaters..what is on you grocery list?

I need to start eating healthy! I am a SAHM and I feel like a snack and eat all day long. I also endulge in ice cream/chocolate every single day. I am in the worst shape I have ever been and I know it is because I eat like sh$$$$tChat Icon

I need motivation and some healthy snack ideas. I don't eat junk (chips, candy ect) and I cook healthy meals for my family all week but the snack are just killing me (ice cream, chocolate, snacks wells 100 calorie packs, ralphs, bakery cookies ect ect) I am also never full. I'm still nursing my son and I think this just increased my appetite so much but there is no excuse!!

I have to add that I seriously get depressed if I don't have a sweet snack at night. What are some substitues for ice cream that are not as bad but forfilling?

I know that when you start eating healthy is becomes addictive but I need that motivation to start. Everyday I tell my self that tomorrow I will start and I never do!

HELP!!

I like hummus and peppers, baby carrots, cucumbers, etc. I also snack on almonds, babybel cheeses (the light ones), and grapes.

For dessert I am currently having sugar free fudge-icles and sugar free puddings.

Friendly's makes a low fat Forbidden Fudge Brownie Frozen Yogurt that I'm obsessed with. Maybe not the best as far as healthy eating goes, but definitely better than regular ice cream.

sugar snap peas
raw broccoli
Litehouse Lite Salsa Ranch for dipping
eggs for veggie omelets
bell peppers (red, orange, yellow)
baby spinach
almonds
natural peanut butter on celery or apple
FF/SF pudding (I make it from the box)
greek yogurt to make homemade tzatziki (I will use this for salad dressing or dipping veggies)
The only 100 cal packs I'll buy are nuts
FF/SF fudge pops
popcorn
reduced fat cheese sticks

Try skinny cow ice cream cones in lieu of full fat ice cream. The ice cream sandwiches they mare are good too.

As far as trying to satisfying your sweet tooth....
Try freezing some bananas when they are a little brown.....then throw 1 into a blender with a little chocolate soy milk (what I used for DD1) or skim milk, splenda and Ghiradelli unsweetened cocoa(how I made it for myself). Add just enough milk as you blend to create a pretty thick consistency...
This is what DD1 thought ice cream was until she was almost 5

I try not to buy any 'junk' because I know I'll eat it.

Are you eating enough fiber, protein and fat to keep you full? That may be part of the reason why you don't feel satisifed.

As far as a sweet snack goes, I really love peach frozen yogurt topped with blueberries and strawberries. Perfectly ripened fruit actually tastes better than typical sweets.

I especially love this type of fruit salad

Some people may take issue with the sugar you are supposed to add, but you can halve that amount and ultimately, it's better for you than chocolate or ice cream.

Good luck!

I buy alot of fruit. Different types so I have a choice- strawberries, grapes, bananas are my favorite.

I also like greek yogurt- I put splenda and berries in it.

As for snacks: jello chocolate mousse is sooo good with light whipped cream

I LOVE ice cream, like I used to eat it every single day. In May, I decided to change it up and after dinner, I have an Edy's Fruit Bar - Orange and Cream. It is sweet and has an ice-cream like center. It has cured me of my ice cream addiction.

ETA: As for chocolate, I get Hershey's bars and will allow myself 3 pieces a day. I never feel deprived and it is good portion control.

Re: Healthy Eaters..what is on you grocery list?

Most of my grocery list is fruits and veggies. I can eat them until they come out my ears.
Last week, alone, I spent $80 on fruit alone!
But it's all I really snack on and all that my kids snack on.
Bananas are really filling, so I keep a lot of those in the house.
I also keep my dinners healthy by making my salads "fun". That's probably the wrong word to describe it, but a "fun" salad for me would be something like:
romaine lettuce
half an avocado diced up or mashed up
two tablespoons dried cranberries
one tablespoon unsalted roasted sunflower seeds
balsamic vinegar and salt to taste (no oil since the avocado has so much fat you don't need it)

OR

romaine lettuce
1/4 cup glazed walnuts
2 tablespoons dried cranberries
2oz. grilled chicken (I like Trader Joes pre-cooked grilled chicken strips)

Anyway, you get the idea. Adding stuff to your salads help make it more appealing to eat. Plus, I love sweet and salty stuff, so by putting it in my salad in a very measured out proportion, I really am satisfied.

I follow WW, so I use points to count on a daily basis, that might be something good for you if you just want to feel in control.

I find that I don't want to "waste" a lot of points on junk. But, at the same time, if I want to indulge, then I can.

The other night, I had a huge ice cream sundae, but the whole day, I had eaten nothing but veggies and some light protein, so I felt ok about it.

Re: Healthy Eaters..what is on you grocery list?

I have no choice but to eat healthy (I have type 1 diabetes)

this is what's on my list

Sweet Potatoes- I have 1 each night - so filling- with a little butter and cinnomon (not Cinnomon sugar)
carrots
hummus
bean chips- a serving is 20 and I dip them in the hummus
almond butter (I grind my own at whole foods)
crackers- wasa crackers- my requirment is that I have to be able to have 3 for less then 15 grams of carb
granoloa bars
special K bars
fiber 1 80 calorie ceral (so good- I add 3 cut up strawberries and it's a full bowl)
thomas bagel flats- I have this toasted with almond butter
fruit
peppers- get them diced for salads
soy chips- you can have 20 of these and they are filling
turkey
deli flats or wonder has a great whole grain bread that is 2 slices for a serving(I found most bread is 1 slice for a serving- which doubles everything- I have to watch carbs)
chicken burgers (trader joes)
salmon burgers (whole foods)
frozen veggies for dinner
Cheese for sandwiches and salads- I mix it up -

for a treat I have a sugar free ice pop or I found tasty cakes that are sugar free and not bad

the real key for me is portion control - I measure my ceral- it's amazing how SMALL an actual serving of ceral is- I used to have at least 3 servings before I had to watch

I go to whole foods, trader joes and target to buy my food each week- target balances out what I spend at whole foods (when I stick to my list Chat Icon )

Re: Healthy Eaters..what is on you grocery list?

I'm the same way with chocolate & ice cream which is why I can't keep it in the house. I wish Breyers would sell individual size cups that you can buy one at a time because I NEED that kind of portion control when it comes to their chocolate ice cream!

As a substitute I'm all about my nightly smoothies. I have one EVERY night. To be honest it's the only thing that keeps me on track. That's the treat I look forward to at night.
I make mine simple using almond milk, frozen banana, frozen cherries (or strawberries). That's it! Sometimes I'll toss in a scoop of whey protein or even a handful of baby spinach.

During the day I like the cocoa roasted almonds for a chocolate fix.
...and even though I'm slowly trying to get away from a lot of processed foods I can't help but enjoy the Fiber One 90 cal brownies. I think these are my emergency PMS treat. Chat Icon

Lately Larabars have been calling my name, but you have to watch the NIs. Even though they're all natural they can add up the calories, etc.

As PP said - the banana soft serve is a staple in our house. It's so easy & it's just that - bananas! You can add chocolate & other fruits to it too.
When I make a BJs run I buy so much bananas & keep them out on my table to get over ripe. Cut them up & freeze them in individual bags for smoothies & soft serve.Chat Icon

Re: Healthy Eaters..what is on you grocery list?

Tons of fruit and vegetables - When they are in the house, I feel like I have to eat them before they go bad otherwise I will have wasted money.

I eat tons of baby carrots dipped in just a little light Ranch dressing.

I'll cut up a cucumber and eat that too.

Strawberries, grapes and watermelon are my favorite fruits.

Part skim mozzerella

Thin sliced turkey breast rolled up with 2% cheddar

graham crackers

Snacks:
baby carrots
almonds
pumpkin seeds
sunflower seeds
LOTS of fruit
for something a little more filling, I'll split a banana (length wise) and spread on some almond butter. Then sprinkle with cinnamon and crushed walnuts. Soo yummy!

Re: Healthy Eaters..what is on you grocery list?

Jenn, I hear you since I am still breastfeeding and now toying with weaning because I am plateauing big time!

Here are my snacks:

homemade guacamole-I either do organic tortilla chips-only what fits in a small ramekin (these are awesome, buy ramekins, they are the portion size for anything bad!) or veggies
hummus and pita chips or veggies
sprouted bread with hummus and turkey and sprouts, vegan butter and jam (great for the sweet tooth!)
Trail mix/nuts
Organic granola bar
Enjoy Life organic cookies
cheese and an apple or a spoonful of peanut butter and an apple
My favorite-chick peas with cracked pepper and sea salt-Sienna loves this snack too!

Like I said, anytime I eat chips (my weakness), I use a ramekin-nothing more. It is a small serving. I use it for ice cream when I have it as well.

For sweets-

I like coconut milk ice cream-much healthier. They have rice milk ice cream and almond milk ice cream too. I use So Delicious. I am very anti-artificial sweeteners so I would rather have a small bit of the sugar stuff, but that is me.
For chocolate, I do a small handful in the ramekin of non dairy chocolate chips (either kosher or Enjoy Life)
This breaks my rule, but Jello Temptations are SF and really tasty!
Fiber One makes a brownie that is 90 calories-breaks my processed rule, but I tried it once and thought it was pretty good.
Bake when you can-sub applesauce in for eggs, canola oil for butter.

I know you are like me and very big on natural and organic food. I do as much in season, ripe fruit as possible to satisfy my sweet tooth. I also avoid processed foods as much as possible-I refuse to eat 100 calorie packs because they are so unhealthy usually. If I want something bad, I have it, but only in a small portion. You can definitely have your pie, just take a small sliver and eat it slowly and savor it! When you take your time, you find you don't need more than that!
