Restaurant Bans Kids
Has anyone seen this article yet? This restaurant is banning kids mostly because the parents have poor control over them..

Good for him. Its his resturant and if business doesnt drop off, then his customers are happy with his choice.
The thing that popped out at me was that he didnt even have a childrens menu. right then and there is should be a "red flag" for parents that this is not a child friendly resturant.

Re: Restaurant Bans Kids
I think it's totally fine-- it's his restaurant & his decision, it's the kind of tone & atmosphere he wants for his restaurant (just like many people want a kid-free wedding). I don't think it's offensive in any way.

Re: Restaurant Bans Kids
If anything, it may increase his business, not deter people from coming, even people who have children for a night out.
And I agree with the owner - it's really much more the parents who don't discipline their children who are of age to be taken to a sit-down restaurant. We're not talking about infants or a Chuck-E-Cheese.
Last week we were upstate taking my niece to see colleges - on Friday afternoon we were at a chain - I think it was Fridays or whatever. At the table next to us, after we were served, was a kid, probably about 5 or 6, screaming like someone was murdering him because he didn't want whatever was put in front of him. The Mom just sat there, ignored him and kept talking to her friend. This went on for 10 minutes, until the kid threw the basket of fries & chickien fingers across the table (some landed on our table). The Mom never apologized to us or reprimanded the kid. She just said to her friend "if I ignore him he'll stop". Great attitude Mom!
We asked the manager to move us to the other side of the restaurant.

I kind of get that, b/c kids do that for attention, but yeah, its not really appropriate in public. Although it's Fridays, so what can you expect. This article is weird to me--the restaurant is decribed as casual, then later as upscale, but I guess if they don't have a kids menu & booster/highchairs, it should come across as a place not to bring your screaming 3 year old.
I wonder if parents would be offended, or would actually look forward to going there on a nigth when they have a sitter.

I don't think family friendly (like TGI Fridays or the like) means it should be a free for all. Kids should be taught how to behave in all restaurants...not just the nice ones. Screaming their heads off and throwing food should not be acceptable and I wonder if they were at home would the kid be ignored until he/she calmed down or would the screaming & food throwing be tolerated?
I was reading a thread about this on another message board and the vast majority of the parents of younger children were totally in favor of the ban. The feeling was if they are paying a babysitter to have an adult night out...they don't want to listen to someone else's kids carrying on while they eat.

ITA with you and I am a parent. Parents do NOT discipline their children anymore and I always look like the "bad mom" because I do. That would be unacceptable EVEN at my own home.

Nothing that drives DH and I crazier than trying to have a nice meal with a kid screaming in our ear or running around a restaurant!

And this is why I would never set foot ina Chuck E Cheese or anything of the equivalent.
At a "family friendly" restaurant - Fridays, Applebees, Friendlys, etc. - I expect to have infants/toddlers crying, or young children scootting around in their seats, talking loud, etc. That does't bother me, it's what they do.
What I expect, that if you have a 5 or 6 year old child (not infant or even a toddler) - and they are screaming bloody murder and throwing food at the parent and other patrons, is that the parent do something about it, not ignore it. I don't have kids but my DH did 10 years of child psych in on inpatient lock down unit, he is more well versed in dealing with children than most parents are. Ignoring that behavior does not stop the behavior or teach the child that the behavior is unacceptable.
I've been in a Ruth's Chris where I saw a couple walk in with 2 children, in the 7-9 year old range, I was shocked. Those kids were great. I've been on cruises and sat at dinner with 5 year olds who were well behaved.
I think the owner is right, it comes down to an increase in the lack of discipline and manners not taught these days.

ITA with you. I expect more noise at a "family" restaurant but don't want to deal with rude kids whose parents turn a blind eye. I truly feel it has gotten worse over the years too. My children are 5 years apart and my oldest child's friends were sooo much more disciplined than my youngest child's friends. The parents have all these excuses too. One that drives me nuts is that "they are boys". AND???? That doesn't mean they have to be obnoxious, loud, rude, violent.

I agree and I am a parent.
I usually don't mind a cry here or there because they are not my child and I don't have to take care of them-lol....but if it is a lot and the parents don't do anything, it annoys me because I don't go out that often to have to deal with obnoxious kids whose parents ignore.

Re: Restaurant Bans Kids
crashing - I'm pregnant.. about to have twins.. and I LOVE this idea.. I mentioned it to a few friends who have kids and they were so offended.. NOT ME.. I really love the idea of going out and having peace, quiet and the knowledge that kids are not going to be there to bother you. I wish they had a ton of restaurants like this on Long Island.. When I want to go out and bring my kids I will go to a kid friendly place.. when I want quiet I will go to a place that explicitly states no kids allowed!

Sorry for crashing, Mom here...I also agree with this restaurant owner, he is doing what is best for his business.
And you are 1000% correct, it is a lack of discipline and manners (in most cases).
I've brought both my kids to 21 Main, they were quieter and well behaved. More so than the table next to us.
We also recently went on a cruise....the kids hardly made a peep at dinner. It was a cruise that had another embarkation on a different night than us. That particular night, this couple came into the restaurant and were shown to their seat, right next to our table with our two kids eating peacefully. This blonde chick looks at my children and says, "Um, it's too crowded right here, it's my anniversary, I'd like to enjoy my dinner in peace." I was FUMING because she was telling the staff that my kids were going to ruin her night. I was thrilled to see that they were then seated right next to the very busy waiters table with all that noise.
Sorry for my ramble, but you are right, it's what the children are taught. If they are taught to sit at dinner and behave, they will.

Re: Restaurant Bans Kids
A friend of mine owns a restaurant in Greenport where kids are not allowed. He even has two kids of his own that do not dine there. I can't blame him! The restaurant is small and elite. Each seat in the restaurant brings in about $100 a head. Put a kid in that seat and you make about $7 and get a mess to clean up. There are places for kids, places for adults and places for pets. Some not to be combined

Re: Restaurant Bans Kids
It doesn't bother me any. *Usually* kids in restaurants don't bother me either. I find it amusing when a kid is misbehaving... in a cute way anyway. If they are screaming their heads off, though, get 'em out! I do agree that some restaurants just aren't intended for kids though!

Re: Restaurant Bans Kids
I'm torn on this. My DS behaves when we are out or I will take him out and he LOVES to go out so just the threat of leaving makes him stop.
Today, we out to a very casual outdoor restaurant with friends. Their 2 1/2 y/o DD never sat at the table. She was playing w/ the rocks (it was an outside restaurant).
DS (3 1/2) was having a hard time behaving b/c her parents accepted her behaviour b/c "that's just DD".
I told DS that we wouldn't go out to eat w/ them anymore b/c it put him in a tough place. It really wasn't fair to him to make him behave when someone else isn't.
I was on him, I told him just b/c someone else isn't listening to the rules, doesn't mean you don't listen to the rules.
On the other hand, Friday I went out with some older cousins/aunts/mom to a new restaurant w/o a kids menu. They said they could make DS chicken fingers, sliders or pasta. DS was very well behaved. When we left, the host/owner said we could bring DS back and he'd make him fish if he wanted.
Okay, I'll stop rambling.
