another hear rate question

i recently got a heart rate monitor because i really wanted to know how many calories i was actually burning. with that i've recently learned about the heart rate zones, including this "fat burn" zone. since my goal is weight loss primarily i tried to stay in that zone mostly. however it is extremely difficult for me to do this because i feel like im moving at a snail's pace! to stay at a heart rate under 136 is almost impossible for me on the arc trainer!

is there something wrong with me?

I am always in the cardio zone. I would only be able to achieve fat burning zone by walking and I have a very low resting heart beat (48 bpm). It is not necessary to stay in the fat burning zone, as is explained in this article:

So is the "fat-burning zone" the best way to lose fat? You better sit down for this one... the answer is no.

Although the "fat-burning zone" uses a higher percentage of fat for fuel; you need to look at the big picture which is calories burned. Below is a chart that compares the two training zones.

Low Intensity Training burns 50% fat for fuel ex: 100 calories x 50% = 50 calories from fat
High Intensity Training burns 40% fat for fuel ex: 160 calories x 40% = 64 calories from fat

Say, for example, you burn 100 calories in 20 minutes of Low Intensity exercise compared to 160 calories in 10 minutes of High Intensity Exercise, you've still burned more total fat doing High Intensity Exercise.

The bottom line: For individuals new to exercise it is recommended to start in this low intensity zone (60 - 70% of maximum heart rate). There will be some benefit in the first 2-3 weeks, initially they can experience even some weight loss. But after this initial stage gradually we need to increase the intensity of our routine.

what max HR are you using to get the 136?


It's very hard to find your true max HR. the formulas are guides, but can be way off.


I know most of the formulas say that my max should be ~185, but I can easily get to the upper 180s and still "sing" (not well, but can do it) If it was my max I would not be able to get anything out. My max HR is probably 200-210

according to the heart rate monitor i have it says my maximum heart rate is 192.
i guess it's just going by 220-age

how could i find my true max HR? a doctor?
