I am making myself sick over this SD thing!!!
Everyone is telling me Harborfields is a great SD. Even for Special Needs.
Now I see on NSASA that someone says it's horrible!
Kill me NOW!!!!
Where the heck are we going to move???

Re: I am making myself sick over this SD thing!!!
I am in the same boat. I want to move before my kids reach kindergarten. I heard one SD was incredible for SN and then we looked at the houses there and I disliked them. I didn't like the feel of the town. It's so upsetting.
I think you need to find a school district that generally has what you are looking for and a home you can fall in love with. People are always going to have different opinions because their situations are all going to be different, but if the SD in general has the reputation for being accommodating I think that's the most important piece. Your child's needs are going to change, your familiy's needs may change etc, you want a SD that years and years and years has a reputation of trying to make the families happy, SN or not. (and of course the funding for it)
I am not sure if administrators will meet with parents that are considering moving to the school district...but maybe you can set up such a meeting to get a feel of what normally is offered and how things work. Summertime would be a good time if the administrators are in, since they are less stressed now.

If you have heard praise all around, and one negative review, I would probably not put too much emphasis on the one negative. The person may have a legitimate gripe, or this could be someone who is never happy with anything, you really don't know.
I think the idea of a meeting is a good one if you can get one with someone in administration.

Thank you!
I was wondering if there was a way to meet with their CPSE/CSE myself.

Re: I am making myself sick over this SD thing!!!
a lot of times the school districts won't meet with you if you or give you a lot of information if you are not a legal resident.
your better bet is to contact the septa's of the school districts you are interested in.
sophie let me know if you need help. i have a lot of septa emails.

Re: I am making myself sick over this SD thing!!!
If you are looking in Suffolk, half hollow hills school district is I think one of the best on LI. We moved to it for my son and I can tell you it is amazing. The services are fantastic. Although my son is not on the spectrum, I know many who are so pleased... The SEPTA is really big in the district too,..
Fm any questions if you want...

Re: I am making myself sick over this SD thing!!!
I would try to meet with them. Liz Tucci has always been so nice, kind and sweet to us. (I have never met the Director, but maybe she sits on CSEs?)
Elizabeth Tucci [email protected] Assistant Director of PPS
But I do think talking to SEPTA is a good idea too! I have the president's name/#/email somewhere if you would like.
But I will comment on HHH - it is a great SD and you'll probably see more 1 acre lots than HF

ITA....I saw the NSASA post and thought of you I am a tad biased because I work for Harborfields and teach Adapted PE for them. I will say that I contacted Liz for information on CPSE meetings for my own district and she is awesome. She emailed me back and also called me so I could pick her brain. It was so very nice of her and she gave me a lot of great feedback. The Director, Vicky, is great too (and she does sit on CSE's). She retired a few years ago and is now back with us. Those three years she was gone it was a bit of a mess. They had different people in there all three years. Now that she has been back the last two years it's been back to normal.
I would definitely contact them and also SEPTA. Good luck!

Re: I am making myself sick over this SD thing!!!
I am a mom/teacher of an almost 10 year old who has special needs. We are in the Shoreham Wading River school district and I'm not impressed, though they did give us some services even before my child had an IEP. We are looking to move, partly so my son can get a blank slate/fresh start somewhere else. I have been asking around and Connetquot keeps coming up as a great district for students with special needs. I work in Sayville and I believe we do everything by the book. I also teach adapted PE like the previous poster :) Good luck!

sophie don't make yourself crazy, schools can't make every parent/child 100% happy. you are a great advocate and fight for what ej needs already so just go with a sd with an over all good reputation and YOU will make the best out of it for him and get him what he needs. focus on the type of program and ratio you feel is best and if they have that, and if they are a decently generous disctrict and of course good teachers. GL!
