want to start running

How do I do it?

Haven't run since I had to do the mile in high school (and I was lucky if I actually ran it!)

Re: want to start running

it's too hot for me outside. esp as a newbie, get to a treadmill.

start slow, don't worry about speed. i would start with a time goal. for ex:
walk 5 min, run 5 min, walk 5 min, run 5 min etc.
then just start increasing the running time gradually

you can do it! it gets easier as you go

Many people on here have had success with the couch to 5k program. (google it, cant post link from my phone)

Or just do intervals your own way. Alternate walking and jogging, listen to your body. Over time you will build endurance and be able to run longer intervals until you are doing all running and no walking.

I agree. A neighbor also told me about doing 100/100 - run 100 steps, walk 100 steps, and repeat for the duration. They said it was good for beginners, people recovering from an injury, or people like them - they are both in their mid-80s and run every day, using this method in the heat!!

So many people on here rave about c25k. I did my own program which was basically just going at my own pace until I could do a mile with out stopping and then I would increase by a 1/4 mile until I could complete that without stopping. I just kept doing that until I got to the 5k mark. It took a lot less time than I thought it would. I am now training for a half marathon which is a far cry from when I first started running just over a year ago so you can definitely build up really quickly.

Whatever program you decide to go with I wish you luck, keep us all posted on your progress!

I agree. I do intervals and at this point run as long as I can and try to take as short of walking breaks as I can. Anything where you do intervals and condition yourself will be helpful. I also do strength training to help condition my body, although I have no idea if that makes a difference.

If you have an iphone or droid, you can download apps to help with this.
