Did anyone get rid of their scale because it caused some sort of unhealthy obsession? Other methods of tracking progress?
Backstory...I had lost a great deal of weight and then following a car accident, I stopped working out and gained a little, even though I follow weight watchers. I didn't worry about it, I thought it would all come back off as soon as I started exercising again. Over two months of inactivity, I gained about 6 lbs. A few weeks ago, I was cleared to exercise and I kept my eating habits clean and began going to the gym twice daily, just until I lost my gained weight and can't figure out why. Everyone keeps telling me that I look thinner but I think it's ridiculous to think it's 6lbs of muscle weight. I find that my moods are directly related to weighing myself now and it discourages me from wanting to work out. Last week I switched to once daily workouts. In the past 2 weeks, I gained 6 lbs and I don't see how with all of the cardio and strength training!
I feel scale obsessed and I don't think it's healthy. If anyone else has dealt with this, please let me know what you do. Do you only weigh in at doctor visits? Measure yourself? Go by the fit of your clothing and your appearance in the mirror? Suggestions are helpful. Thanks!

How often are you weighing yourself?

Every other day? Every third day? It depends.

I weigh myself daily. I am a bit scale obsessed but I find that it sometimes helps me to see the daily fluctuations. Do I still get nervous when the scale creeps up? Absolutely but atl east I see that some days I am up, some days I am down.
If you are feeling unhealthy with it, I strongly suggest putting it away somewhere and not using it. How are your clothes fitting? How do you FEEL?

I don't think the scale is a good tool for measuring health and fitness.
As long as you are following a healthy lifestyle, exercising, and are happy with the way your clothes fit, does the number on the scale actually mean anything?
It took me awhile, but I've come to realize that the number is just that...a number.
It doesnt reflect anything about who i am.

I feel good! Toned except for the tummy, but that's always my deal! My clothes fit a tad bit big, I feel some more definition in certain muscle groups. I honestly feel great, I'm just stuck on how in 2 months of not exercising, I gained 6 lbs and within two weeks of working out really hard, it's now doubled. It's discouraging. If there was a fluctuation of a few pounds but it was up AND down, I wouldn't mind but the fact that it's consistently up is upsetting.

Ok here is what i suggest..and it's so hard to do but since you are feeling so good, ditch the scale. If your clothe are feeling good and you are feeling good than you dont need it. If for some reason (and i say a big fat IF) your clothes start feeling tighter, then you can start tracking your weight but for now it seems like it is just holding you back more than helping!

So, let me get this straight. You did not exercise for 2 months and gained 6 pounds. You then started exercising and gained 6 additional pounds in 2 weeks. I would personally consult a doctor. Also, are you eating enough?
I pretty much weigh myself every day, so you are not alone. It lets me know if I have overdone it with eating as I have never technically been on a diet (no calorie counting, etc.) If I see a "high" number, I decide no ice cream for snack that night.

Re: Did anyone get rid of their scale because it caused some sort of unhealthy obsession? Other methods of tracking progress?
I was once scale obsessed. Would weigh myself every morning first thing, and then sometimes throughout the day to see the fluctuations, but then if the next morning I weighed more I would think "Well yesterday I only weighed XX so what did I do differently?"' and so on.
Once I also wound up weighing less than I should have - I wasn't as scale obsessed but did like seeing the low numbers. I was a gym rat though - I was unhappy and would go to the gym every single day for hours of cardio because I had nothing else going on at that point in my life.
So now, I don't have a scale. I am aware of what I weigh because I have frequent doctor appointments but I go by how I think I look, how I feel, and how my clothes fit. Makes for a much healthier outlook for me.

Yes, that's right. I thought I was eating enough by following weight watchers daily requirements.

What types of foods are you eating? can you give us an example of a typical day of food and workouts? For me, weight watchers was not a good match.

Re: Did anyone get rid of their scale because it caused some sort of unhealthy obsession? Other methods of tracking progress?
Gaining 12 pounds in two months while eating a healthy diet is a bit concerning. I agree with the pp who suggested you see a doctor. I know WW uses a points system but do you know the break down of your macronutrients? Did you change the types of food you are eating? As for the scale question I weigh myself almost every day and I know what my normal weight flucuations are so I do not worry about small gains. If I gain more then my what is normal for me and I know I have been eating healthy I will schedule an appointment with my endocrinologist...but I have a thyroid disorder and this is a sign that my medication need s to be increased.
