Re: Has anyone taught themselves to knit?

i taught myself to knit using the internet... back in the stone ages, ya know, before youtube.

my suggestions are:
buy wool yarn, use wood needles, and check out knitpicks.com and youtube
(wool yarn is "sticky" and so are wood needles... this helps in preventing a lot of "beginner mistakes")

knitpicks sells yarn and needles. they have good quality inexpensive yarn and they have some learn to knit videos.

knitpicks also has a podcast. it's pretty good.

oh, another great blog is techknitting... that woman is amazing

finally, the best website for all things knitting is ravelry.com. the people there are amazing: kelley petkin (the owner of knitpicks) and the techknitter are both on ravelry... there is also a lot of other people there who will answer ANY knitting question.

if i lived in LI, i would come over and teach ya

There is a great "How to Knit" instruction packet you can print off from the Lion Brand Yarn Website. It is fairly well illustrated and easy to understand. I've learned enough to knit a scarf, but not anything fancy like a sweater or socks. There is also a whole database of free patterns to knit or crochet, so don't waste your $ on pattern books they sell at Michaels.

Youtube is awesome, so is Ravelry.

Start with casting on, then master a simple knit stitch. Then master a purl. Almost every pattern is based on knits and purls.

I did, you tube. I never got good at knitting though. I took to crochet better.
