recommend a fantasy series NOT young adult
anyone have a series they just love that is NOT young adult.
terry brooks' shannara series is one of my favorites. Looking for something along those lines

Games of Thrones or Eye of the World.
ETA: Those are DH's 3 favorite series!
Also, Lord of the Rings, of course!

I have to recommend The Belgariad, by David Eddings. It's a series of five books, and there's a sequel series, called The Mallorean. They've been my favorite fantasy books forever. (I feel disloyal to Harry Potter saying that, but the Eddings books have been around longer, so I'll get over it.  )

I've never read the series you mentioned, so I'm not sure if you would like this, but I love the Robin Hobb books. I especially like the trilogy that starts with Assassin's Apprentice.

Im reading the Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier and they are FANTASTIC!! The first one is called "Daughter of the Forest."
UH. MAY. ZING.
I also LOVe Game of Thrones.
If you loved Shannara you will probably enjoy these. They are not futuristic, but deal with the Fair Folk and Old Folk of Ireland, lots of magic, etc.

thanks ladies!
took your advice and bought game of thrones at the borders sale (took the last one and then saw a girl saying she needs to pick it up for SO. i would have felt bad but .... oh well!)
will let you know how it goes once i have some time to read! =)

If your into adult vampire romance, definitely The Black Dagger Brotherhood.
Straight up fantasy:
The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman. One of my all time favorites. They even made a computer game of it in the 90s.
RA Salvatore's Drizzt D'urden books.
Anne McCaffrey's The Dragon Riders of Pern. It's technically scifi, but yes, as the name suggests, its got dragons. These books got me hooked on scifi/fantasy.
The Hobbit. Tolkein.

Hmmm, I felt like it was pretty intriguing right from the word go, but not fast-paced. It never seemed fast pace to me, but more like constantly interesting. There was something that happened at the beginning of the book that made me go  and really want to keep reading, but I can't remember how far along it is and I don't want to give it away if you haven't read it yet.

I thought I'd throw out Terry Pratchett's name if you wanna try funny fanstasy. I haven't read him since college, but he has a big series about a whacky made up world of fantasy that makes fun of our own. I used to read his books with a smile on my face the whole time.
